    Hello NBR!

Some of you may have noticed the thread, " M17x r3 680M compatability". Within that thread, we've come to the conclusion that if you have a 3D M17x r3, you will loose your ability to use the 3D on the machine. Some consider this a dealbreaker.

But we're attempting to get this changed, and we need your help to do this!

On ideastorm, we've put up a thread regarding the issue and could use every single vote possible to help draw attention to this.

Much more detail on the actual ideastorm page:

Please, take a moment to read over and vote for the thread if you agree.

    Thanks,

    E.

    Thanks guys.

I have some good news to bring:

Luis (from Alienware) has replied to my PM:

The A05 BIOS was released to provide 3D playback licenses that were not included in the R4. R3's already have this, what needs to be modded is the driver.

Main problem right now is the 680M has not yet been validated for the M17x R3 and unfortunately we don't have an ETA for this to happen.

I can assure you I'm looking forward and pushing as much as I can for this to happen as I want to get a 680m for my R3 as well :/

Today I requested updates on that, I'll get back to you if when have any news from engineering.

I will keep everyone posted with further updates in this thread. :)

    Good news!

Dell representative Francisco S. has stated that, "... we will review the feasibility of adding the drive to M17xR3". His full response can be read at the ideastorm page linked in the original post.

I'd like to thank everyone for their continued energy into promoting this on ideastorm, +rep to those who've voted + posted in here for helping raise awareness. :)

It is now the top trending idea on the homepage of Ideastorm.

Still no word from Luis on these forums via PM or Francisco on Ideastorm, but the moment I hear anything I'll share what I've learned in this thread!

Just figured I'd give everyone an update as to the current status - we're still the top trending article on IdeaStorm, I've still not heard word from Francisco or Luis yet, and there's another article on IdeaStorm which I think should be voted for as well because it not only allows us to have our upgrade, but the M18x as well.

Thanks j95 for your continued efforts! +rep

Whatever you guys are trying, that will not be possible. Guys from dell have sold thousands of 7970m for people with an R3 (non 120Mhz) and to date they do not have a 'proper' driver that works as it should with this system. 7970m it has been out quite alot compared to the 680m... I'm starting believing that all this are false promises... But, best of luck!

After a long delay, I have somewhat good news.

Francisco S. from IdeaStorm stated a couple of days ago:

"... we acknowledge your desire to upgrade to a better card and we continue working on our side to improve your experience with Alienware."

So it looks like there is still hope. Please continue to vote for and comment on the IdeaStorm thread - it can only help. :)

    Thanks for the continued effort!

Thanks for keeping this going BlakeE450. As stated, the idea is under review by the Alienware team. There is not much information that can be shared during this process so try to be patient.

@BlakeE450 - Kudos to you for your efforts mate!
@Cy_J - Glad to know that this is under review... Its rare to come across a company that actually listens these days, so thank you for that :) Hope to hear some good news soon!

At this point I doubt it's going to happen. I have talked to numerous reps they don't even allow you to buy the card anymore. Alienware has never wanted you to upgrade their "older" hardware. It's all about buying the latest if you want upgrades.

I think they better on this one. I have an R3 3d with the 580m and it is unplayable. It slows to a slideshow at 60 Deg C. My 460m ran so much better than this 580m does. I have no other options to keep my 3D now.

It's all a joke. My HDMI "In" doesn't work for anything, and my HDMI "out" in my 3D Compatible premium laptop is not 3D Compatible! This laptop is the definition of useless by means of false promotion.

Alienware has become such a cluster "bad word".

That's because you haven't fixed your problems. The 60C slideshow problem is easily fixable using this:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...throtting-fix-no-need-modify-system-bios.html

As for 3D, it is advertised as a 3D capable not 3D compatible meaning the monitor is 3D with glasses but not the HDMI and very few laptops if any support HDMI 1.4 out. Maybe you should have done some research first before complaining.

I understand there is a fix for this, I just believe after $3600 for a luxury item I shouldn't have to scour the net to find fixes. Dell and Nvidia are both huge companies and this problem shouldn't exist.

As far as "capable -vs- compatible" and doing my research before complaining, I'm not referring to website quotes, I was specifically told by salespeople and the tech I spoke to the day I ordered that this would hook to my Samsung 3D TV and play flawlessly in 3D. "True plug and play"... as could I run my PS3 and 360 through my laptop monitor, both of which has been false (*at least the 360 doesn't work, have yet to try the ps3).

As far as few laptops supporting 1.4a out... ASUS G55 and 75.

Before the pending back and forth war, I want to thank you for your fix and the thread you made about it. It's that I feel Dell and/or Nvidia should be the ones backing their products on this.

Of course I sincerely agree with you in terms of the fact that it is not users that should be coming up with such solutions.

As to the HDMI issue, I think that non Dell drivers disable the HDMI In but it can be fixed with a registry hack. As for HDMI Out, I know some people that have managed to push 3D to their TVs but I cannot test either In or Out because I do not have the sufficient equipment. Do a search around, maybe you can dig up the thread about HDMI In.

Wow, I'm glad to hear about the HDMI in news... Will have a look see and keep my fingers crossed!

    Thanks.

EDIT: Thanks for the tip man I did find it, just for the good of the forums and having multiple reference points, here is the HDMI workaround thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...hdmi-not-working-work-around-nvidia-last.html
