    Hello bros and sis!

I need your help with my m17x , i recently traded my old pc for a used M17x R3 and i'm suffering some problems i'll list them below!

    PC SPEC

    I7 2820 QM
    GTX 580M
    SSD 240 Corsair
    HDD 500GB
    16GB DDR3 1600Mhz ( 2x8GB Corsair Vegeance)
    PSU 240w

1 - What temps i should expect on this machine ? The first thing what i've done was change thermal paste with a brandnew EVGA FROSTBITE, and i'm hitting between 80 to 100c playing games like fallout and this couse machine insta shutdown. There's anything to do ? I've an old M15x too with 920XM using ThrottleStop to downclock and keep temps nice, there's any program to use in M17x to avoid that high temps ?
*EDIT* Ok, problem half/solved, notebook are not controling cooler its self, so i'm using hwinfo to set cooler to 4100RPM, what's the max speed? Why can't i control my GPU and my CPU separately?

2 - This M17x R3 come with GTX 580M and there's a strang thing happening when i'm using M17x LCD my FPS down to 35~~40 and never reach 100% GPU LOAD it keep always between 60 to 70% GPU loading, but never 100%! in another way if i'm using my 23" Monitor full HD with HDMI cable, my game lock at 60 FPS and GPU start to work at 100% load. My GPU temps are fine, never hit above 60c so i dont think its a overheating problem.

*editing* If i let the M17x iddle for a while like 10 minutes ( while game are running ) when i come back to use it my fps suddenly drop to 7~10 and it take some time to get back to normal.

The gaming what i'm using to test this is World of Warcraft, but this happen with anothers games too!

3 - After solving all this issues, what i need to upgrade and what is my limit upgrade for this M17x. Can i put a better proc ? What is the best usable gpu ?

Hi, I don't know about the CPU but for your machine a 680m would give it a new lease of life and is probably the most compatible. It is easier if you have the 120hz display?

I'm kinda surprised you even have a working 580m. Notorious for failing but yours sounds like it's never been pushed for some reason?

Search out '680m on R3', you should find a few threads with details.

    Good luck.

Y, the last owner of this notebook never even overclocked GPU and prob never play hard on it.. Notebook was used only for web...
GPU works totally fine now, really nice performance but to be realistinc, i can push hard this m17x my cpu are running so hot...
The only way to play GTA V is disable CPU turbo, but drop dramatically my performance. Playing GTA shut down pc before game start, this happen with fallout some this and when this not happen my cpu reach 95c.. So there's any way to get this work properly?

I've not come across any CPU overheating on these machines so I'm guessing that the starting point is a CPU clean out and re-paste. The original paste does degrade over time so worth starting with that before trying any other methods of getting the temp down.

What GPU temps are you seeing? That card throttles down to unusable at around 76c and will trigger a shutdown in the mid 90's c.

Another issue with the 675m is random throttling during gaming. You see this in-game as the clock drops from 620mhz to 405mhz. If this is happening then the only fix is to use a modded vbios with the P0 and P1 clocks matched. It can be done in NvidiaInspector but this does not stop the voltage dropping so a crash is still possible.

    Good luck.
