People need to look at your specs when you make purchases from the Dell Outlet. I just bought for 1400$ a 17xR3 with AMD 6990m, and an i7 chip - the video card was the selling point, not to mention that this thing runs over 2300$ new.
Come to find out it was delivered with an AMD 6970m. So had I not looked at all my hardware, I would've never known. It's going back. Unfortunatly 6990s are sort of rare at that price point and I almost can't pass up the savings.. but I can wait. Just FYI.

I would give alienware tech support a call. they will correct the problem once they see your invoice. your support warranty comes with next business day, so use it. good luck

Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Ya it is likely it was a typo/clerical error on Outlet. If you have your invoice that shows 6990M, they can send a technician to your home to replace said wrong items.

Post a screenshot of GPU-Z. It may infact already be a 6990M
-
Yup. ^
It appears as a 6970M/6990M
You need to look at the shader count -
Agreed. Unless you looked at the shader count and it said 960, I bet you do have a 6990m. GPU-Z doesn't identify the 6990 correctly.
Dell has great service though, if it is wrong, they will fix it. -

Image as attached. 6970m so says gpuz, but shaders apparently number in the range of the 6990m. So what is it?

SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
that's a 6990m
the 6970 only has 960 shader pipelines and runs at 680/900
the 6990 has 1120 shaders and runs at 715/900
certain versions of gpuz reports it as a 6970 because the id is the same as the 6990 -

I thought the same thing when I got my M18x but they are 6990's and when you install latest driver it will just say 6900 series.
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
^^^ Agreed. You're using a very old Dell driver, which predates 6990M use. Update your driver, and the 6970M identification will disappear.
-
Just as I thought
-
Yup. When I first installled my 6990M it actually seemed to show it as a 6970M before I installed the latest drivers

I got my M17xR3 from the Outlet sale the other day, and I'm sending it back. I made sure to check everything out as soon as I got it. It was missing the 3D glasses and has noticeable scratches and blemishes. The F11 key is even loose!
I called them prepared to rip them a new one, because the guy I ordered it from, promised me that it would not look used, and would be without marks or scratches. To my surprise, they were very nice and accommodating about it. It took the guy awhile to find a part number for the glasses to get them ordered for me, but I'm getting a pair of glasses for it, as well as a replacement laptop. He said that it would also be Certified Refurbished, but that it should not have scratches on it such as mine has. The replacement will be of equal specifications or better (since it's outlet and they don't customize them).
I was disappointed at first with them because of the laptop they sent me, but I'm very happy with their service now. I'm glad I purchased a 2 year accidental warranty with it, because if they always treat me as well as they did today, then I'm glad I picked them. Just thought I'd share my experience
[solved] - Outlet purchase, make sure you got what you paid for
