I think it's too thick. I know most 2.5in laptop HDD's are 9.5mm thick and this one is 15mm

Why not an SSD instead of the mechanical drive. Have you checked speed test of both and compared specs. I would pick up a Samsung 830 256gb for less than $200 and call it a day or even setup a pair in raid for your m17x.

As it's been stated, SAS drives are not compatible. WD Raptor drives are 2.5" but at like 12.5 or 15mm thick and won't fit inside, and I wouldn't recommend using such a high RPM drive as they generate alot of heat and noise.

The only 10k SATA drives I know of are the Western Digital VelociRaptor series. They are technically 2.5" drives, but I think they are thicker than 9mm. Plus, they come mounted on a giant heatsink for a reason. They draw a lot of power, and put off a lot of heat. In fact, I don't think the laptop power would be sufficient. As mentioned above, just get an SSD. Velociraptors were great drives in their day (I've owned a couple), but with how cheap SSDs have become, there really isn't much of a point anymore.

Oh wow, I'm glad I didn't pull the trigger on that. What SSD's are you guys using lately? I only wanna spend about 150 (if that's even possible)

My personal recommendations are the Crucial M4, Samsung 830, and Intel 520. They are all good performers and are the 3 most reliable brands.

The 128GB Crucial M4 and Samsung 830 are available for $99 on newegg right now. Larger than that will probably be over your budget.
