Hi i tried installing the 11.9 CCC (mobility ed.) to no avail
the application starts, and proceeds to install the drivers while it flashes the screen etc it finally BSOD's..... please help
i am now running an SSD and don't think i want to experiment till a i can know a tried and tested method for installing it....
-
I believe the method is...
Start up in safe mode(F8 I believe)
Delete current + Driver sweep for remnants, install stock dell driver, then install the later one of your choice, 11.9-10-10a-10b, whatevers.
Try that.
Btw, you can choose to download the 6990 driver. It's the same as the 6970 driver since its AMD and CCC. -

First, download this file and save it somewhere on computer like desktop:
ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver
Then:
- Go into control panel and uninstall "Display Driver"
- When the computer reboots, you will be running using default microsoft driver. The resolution will probably be 640x480 or 800x600...either way, your icons will look huge
- next, double click on the file previously downloaded
- let it install...
- It will reboot, and that's it

BTW, here are the official instructions from AMD on how to install a new driver. They actually have an install manager that will clean all ATI drivers and software off your machine first before you install the new driver. I didn't know that:
GPU-33: Graphics Driver Installation Instructions for Microsoft Windows 7 -
Yeah guys...but issue is that a complete uninstall will uninstall the Intel HD3000 and i won't have switching ....i need to have drivers that would install over the Default Dell drivers for the 6970M
-
Same issue here, I need catalyst drivers that will install over the dell one. I just tried installing 11.9 and it gave me a crash memory dump and unisntalled the original dell driver...
-
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/mobile/11-9_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe
So in the past I had the original dell stock drivers. Subsequently I just installed the 11.5 drivers over the top and everything was fine. Then when the time came around I installed 11.6 over the top of 11.5 and again absolutely fine. Same done with 11.7 and 11.8 (which is what I am currently on). Not sure why the 11.9's are bricking things now. Admittedly I haven't tried them yet as haven't had time. Do you install all the interim caps profiles etc? I personally never do, just wait til the next driver update.
Only thing I can suggest is go into add/remove programs and select Catalyst Install Manager, 'change' and then I believe it's 'Express Uninstall'. Reboot the laptop and then install the latest Dell Stock Driver which will include the intergrated IGP drivers aswell the AMD ones. Once your stable and things run ok you can try to install the 11.9's over the top again. If they fail again I am not too sure what else to suggest.
The trouble with updating the drivers is many people have different ways to do it. A lot of recommendations is to uninstall the current AMD drivers and use CC cleaner to remove all remnants but I've found in the past using this can also have it's own side effects if something critical is removed.
I've said it before but I personally wish AMD would give the driver updates a bit of a rest. You feel compelled to update but it is a fraught process that causes stress if things don't go smoothly. I'd rather quarterly updates instead of every single month! I feel exactly the same towards other updates - windows updates can cause problems, iTunes updates (grrr, don't get me started on that one!)
That being said, I've never had a problem but there will undoubtedbly be a time when it does all go belly up! -

Guys, this will work to install reference drivers. It's not pretty, it's a PITA, it requires some patience, it's not the only way, but it will work.
First, to use AMD reference drivers and retain switchable graphics, you have to install them over the Dell default drivers. The Dell drivers include the drivers for the Intel IGP, but the reference drivers do not, so you have to continue using the Intel drivers from the original Dell set. Sometimes, the newer versions (at least the WHQL versions) will install and function cleanly, but mostly they do not. One workaround that works is after launching Install Manager for the new drivers, use Custom Install for the new drivers and do not install the newer version of Catylst Control Center.
Most often, when installing 11.9 or the 11.10 Preview drivers over the Dell drivers, you will get a BSOD part way through the installation (set to Custom, all except CCC). Upon reboot, it will boot into VGA screen with a notice that it was unable to find a valid driver for the AMD card. If you check Device Manager you will find that the 11.9 or 11.10 display drivers were installed for the 6990M and the original Dell driver remains for the Intel IGP, but are said to lack a valid digital signature (even if they do). At that point, reboot tapping F8 at the boot screen to access the boot options, select (highlight) disable driver signature enforcement and boot. It will then boot cleanly with the new drivers (can check through DM or GPU-Z), but the installation was not complete because of the prior BSOD. So, run setup again to start Install Manager and repeat the installation effort (Custom, all except CCC). The second time everything will install normally (if asked whether to install an unsigned driver, agree and proceed), except that when finished, it will not ask whether to reboot to complete the process as it should. At that point, shutdown the computer. Upon restart, it should boot normally, with all 11.9 or 11.10 drivers and apps except CCC installed, CCC from the July/August Dell driver set still in place and switchable graphics fully functional. This procedure has worked many times for me, and it should work the same for you. It is a PITA and requires some patience, but it will work in the end. Good luck. -
So is it fair to assume that, as long as I choose custom install every time, deselect CCC and install the drivers over the original Dell one it will install fine (without going BSOD on me)? It just sounds like the drivers will conflict no matter what, except some people seem to install them without problems...
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
No, you will get a BSOD during the first stage.
"Most often, when installing 11.9 or the 11.10 Preview drivers over the Dell drivers, you will get a BSOD part way through the installation . . . ." -
Oh... sorry about that, gotcha. Also, does this pertain to the 11.9/10 drivers? Hope it won't be a recurring issue...
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
I expect it will be a continuing problem until Dell revises its drivers to remove whatever is preventing the clean installation of AMD reference drivers, presumably in an effort to protect the switchable graphics function.
-
I've gone from:
Clean Win7 Format > Dell Driver 11.8 > 11.9 RC > 11.10 Preview
I never uninstalled the previous driver when upgrading
Not had a single BSOD, since I bought the laptop
Integrated graphics works just fine with 11.10 CCC, screen brightness works fine, OverDrive works fine
No problems playing demanding games either
I've had this driver (11.10) for about a week now.
I also didn't need to do anything technical when installing the drivers, everything just worked, no errors at all. -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
knock on wood...so far, i haven't done anything special in my installs either. -
I've seen the BSODs when trying to upgrade AMD graphics drivers, but ONLY with the newer 6970M/6990M drivers from Dell! You can do this (that's what I'm using right now, and it's STABLE):
Uninstall graphics driver (no need to use Clean Sweeper, just make sure, if need be, you uninstall the graphics driver through Device Manager, so it reverts to the Windows VGA mode)
Download the OLDER 6970M driver:
Drivers and Downloads
Install it and reboot. Then install the new Catalyst 11.9 drivers from:
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/mobile/11-9_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc.exe
or
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/mobile/11-9_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc_ocl.exe
That's it. That should work without giving you a BSOD and switching still works -
I can only back up what CaveBear, Prank & Slickdude said. I started off with the dell stock 6970 driver. Not even the latest release, these were something like March drivers. Admittedly I havent dabbled with 11.9 or 11.10 previews yet as I dont think 11.9 yielded in benchmarks much improvement (plus I dont own any of the related games said to be improved). But 11.5, 11.6, 11.7, 11.8 have all just been installed over the top with the new CCC & always been fine and dandy. Switching still works like a charm!
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
The lack of installation problems when using the old drivers is interesting. I'll try that later tonight and see if it works for me.
-
Going to give this a shot now as i am having issues installing the new AMD Rage drivers even though the others never gave me any BSODs prior. this one is being a pain ..
Thanks Rev. -
i have new amd rage drivers with no issues at all!!!are they desktop drivers??no mobile??
-
Edit: finally got the RAGE drivers installed but it was a pain..
Had to roll back to an old 6970m driver from my old R3 drivers i had kickin around in a folder, R291070(thats the Dell file number) then i attempted to install the drivers again but it failed to install them but no BSODs this time after that i did a manual install from the device manager and everything is peachy. Switchable graphics still working fine.
The numbers seem good though for everything stock.

The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Hey, Quad, you got it done -- and with all the bells and whistles! What a coup. That's a beast. Waiting on some benches. Tried XTU yet? +Rep.
The old driver method doesn't work for me. The 11.9's install over the old (R291070) drivers without any BSOD, but CCC won't open. Tried it a couple of times, tried uninstalling and reinstalling 11.9 CCC, same outcome. Returned to old workaround. Sloppy, but works well enough. PITA though. -
Hey Rev.
No XTU yet as i just got it yesterday and i think without some cooling on the CPU i probably wont press my luck.. I know the CPU can handle 4.2ghz 24/7 but we dont have that nice M18x CPU HS either.
CCC opens fine for me but i installed the new CCC and then had to manually install the driver afterwards.
I dont install Hyrdavision nor AVIVO and i think i unchecked something else as well so maybe one of those things is stopping it from opening on your end.
I am using the factory install also for now because everything runs fine and i dont have an SSD so i didnt see the need to start all over . My numbers are good though and WOW i forgot how fast these Sandybridge CPUs are and how much of a difference i am seeing in games compared to the M15x with the 720QM and 6990. Its night and day in some games honestly. -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
I'm jealous of all that power.
-
Lol dont be
.
2820 is the same actually as the stock 2920xm or at least mine.
Im sure if you had this CPU though you would be having a whole lot of fun pushing it to its limits. -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
I'll be satisfied with what I've got -- for now. My 6990M isn't good enough to justify a CPU upgrade. First things first.
-
to the people running the new 11.9's on the older Dell ATI ddrivers...have you noticed any old issues cropping up
Aero issues
not switching issues
Media buttons not working....
i am downloading the older driver set now....but would rather keep the existing set if it means everything on the pc is working normally -
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
First, make sure you have the mobile driver. Download here:
ATI Catalyst? Mobility Display Driver
Next, the offical AMD recommended way to install a driver is here:
GPU-33: Graphics Driver Installation Instructions for Microsoft Windows 7
Some people here just have issues installing the latest drivers for some reason. The Revelator has also outlined his way to do it, but its a little more involved.
i've also read of a few members who tried it a second time, it just worked for some reason when the first time failed. -

Thanks SlickDude! Don't know what driver I was using. The driver you linked worked
-
I tried few times over a week now and the actual solution is:
1. Have the default Dell driver installed.
2. Install ATi driver 11.9 and it will go into BSOD / restart.
3. When it restarts your screen will be at a lower resolution.
4. Install ATi driver 11.9 and there will be no issues.
5. Restart and enjoy the new driver.
Hope this helped. -
Ok this worked for me.
Uninstall all ATI drivers with AMD catalyst install manager in programs>Programs and features.
In AMD catalyst install manager select Uninstall>Express uninstall.
Uninstall everything!!!!
Next go to My Computer>system properties> Device manager> Display Adaptors. Double click your GPU, go to drivers and select Uninstall.
Once unistalled restart.
Once restarted, install Dell ATI drivers from Dell Drivers and downloads. Restart. then install 11.10 drivers over the top.
This worked a charm for me. before i couldnt even boot the game. Right now it runs smooth as and looks great. no choppiness, crashing texture bugs etc.
Hope this helps. -
Taped F8 and tried disableing driver signature forced to no avail.
Then chose restart with last known good boot and it is now working but
volume/dvd controls on top of keyboard are not working and when I FN F4 or F5 the on screen graphics for dimming do not show up but the dim brightness do work.
When I go into devise manager it shows 11.9 version.
I am going to fish around some more and see what is and is not good and potentially go back to the old dell drivers since everything worked fine if a bit slower on Vantage...
Should I uninstall everthing before I restall the dell drivers if I decide to go that way?
Edit: Rebooted and everthing seems to be working ok. Ran a Vantage (on stock clocks) and got 14455 11.9 drivers v. 13784 dell drivers about 5% improvement and temps were 82 v 86 (pre paste)
What else (besides gaming) should I check to be sure everything is working and stable? -
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Much better, Dr. J. See whether CCC will open and if so which version it is (last line in CCC>Information>Software)?

Excellent, the updated version. That is what I'm having problems getting to install. Or, it installs. but won't open.
-
I'd love to say it was my expertise and skill that got it to install but it was just luck.
It was a bit dicey with those rolling BSOD/Restarts plus when the dell driver would not install in safe mode....
I guess I could just pull my powercord to see if the Intel driver works? -
There is a brand new V2 of the 11.10s that just came out with ALOT of recent fixes all rolled into a new driver. Going to give it a whirl now
.
Edit: Installed flawlessly over my current set with no BSODs.

+1 Rep..... (it worth +30 rep I guess....) -
well... for me, it was more or less the AMD_BLACKCOMBXT_A00_R291070 driver that worked WITHOUT any BSODS or random restarts
i simply expressed uninstalled
rebooted and installled this driver version
then rebooted
and installed the 11.9 dd ccc
then reboot and finally the 11.9....switching and other media keys work as usual -
