Yes the Australian site is still showing the gtx460 with 3d screen selection but you can select the gtx 580m when you get to the video selection and check out with gtx580m

If you get the card from somewhere yessssss. BUT nobody knows if cards from Sager/Clevo etc wil work in the R3 so currently bound to Dell and their prices, think 850 dollar like prices for that 1 card.

I have asked my rep for a price since I just received my system today.

I don't want to do a refund since I have been in enough of those already and I don't want to do anymore... I just want a laptop already...

I predict it will be in the US by next week +/- a few days.

Any visibilty difference from the 120hz screen and the 60z screen? I had a m17x r3 with the 3d bundle before and the screen was amazing, very bright good color. I heard that the 60z screen isn't as bright. Confirm/Deny?

    60hz isnt as bright.

    400 vs 300 or something.

has to be brighter as you wear sunglasses while looking at it :p

That's correct. The rest of the specs, including gamut coverage and contrast, are the same according to Dell. Only difference is brightness and refresh rate.

    Gamut is about 23% higher.

What is the Dell P/N for the 580M?

If you call in and talk toa rep they can manually config the 3d bundle with the 580. I'm pissed beause they want me to cancel my order to add the 3d screen so screw that.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to do a return on mine and just let me pay the POS cost in trade for the 460, however its not looking good so far.

I sent a plead email cause I have been though too many exchanges and new orders that enough is enough.

(I know I posted this already, but I feel the need to cross post in this case)

OK, i was just quoted a price for the card - and well - its not good.

Not including tax and shipping, it appears to be around $1200 - just the card itself

    This isn't good....

Where are the documents or benchmarks that say that? If you look at the Dell screen selection help (click on help when choosing your screen) it shows a breakdown of all the AW displays and lists both the 60 Hz and 120 Hz as having the same 72% or 73% gamut coverage.

I would be interested to see as I'm still mulling over if the 120 Hz screen is worth the money for me (I don't care about 3D).

If I buy a GTX 580m off ebay will it work in my m17x R3 3D ? I currently have the GTX460m in it, will the current heat sink work ok? will i just need themal pads and new themal paste for it to work? Has dell done anything to the GTX 580m bios or anything to stop a stock GTX580 working on 3D ?

I wish I had the link still there was a list of all alienware laptops and the panels used and the gamut ratings. The 3D screen is 72% the non is 50 or 55%...It's super dull compared to the 3D one

    Was it this per chance?

Dell - Help Me Choose: Display

This lists both the 17.3" 1080p 60 Hz and 120 Hz m17x panels. The differences are 100 nits more brightness on the 120 Hz panel, and a glossy (truelife) finish on the 120 Hz panel (I thought both were glossy). It lists both as having the same 72% gamut coverage, as does the m18x display.

There is a big difference in quality between the 1600x900 and 1920x1080 displays though.

I'm not saying I trust any of this 100%, but it's the only documentation/specs I've seen.

ok so i have the M17X 3D laptop with the 460m video card, and i am currently on my 3rd replacement. I was growing very tired of this whole thing and was going to return it and get my money back and go to another company. however i saw now that the 580m is being offered on these laptops. I love the 3D on this laptop but can't deal with all its shortcomings. So when i saw the 580m being offered with the 3D display in the UK i was quite ecstatic. Usually the states receive the new stuff first, so i was quite surprised that this was being offered in the UK first. Does anyone know why? Well the real reason for my post is because i have been approved for a return and will be sending this back, however I just want to know when do you guys think that the U.S. will get the 580m and 3D option. I dont want to return this laptop and then have to wait to long. I would like some round about figure im not asking for an exact date. I would really appreciate any info you guys have.

I have had both 60hz and 120 hz panels side by side and I would NEVER buy a 60hz panel. I too like the 120hz and brighter and better screen. Unfortunately my r2 with the rgb is still good enough for me I can't get used to the 1080 vs 1200.

I recommend the 120hz panel to everyone who gets an r3. Now with the 580 you guys have the best panel available across the whole alienware lineup and a strong gpu. Don't cheap out on a poor panel it's the 1 thing you stare at 100% of the time.

Unfortunately it's $500 for that extra 100 nits of brightness and nothing else ($300 for GPU upgrade from 6990, and $200 for screen upgrade from 1080p/60). If the 580M was the same price or at least less than $100 from the 6990M, I might wait and go for that config, but as it stands I think the price has decided on a 6990M for me. Extra screen brightness is not worth $500 to me.

Extra screen brightness. better gamut. You stare at your screen 100% of the time and your gpu is working to the maximum how much of the time ? Browsing the web? No. Doing anything else besides gaming on maximum settings? 580 can also make the 120hz shine because it can pump uber frames.

Do I think it's worth the cost no not really. Not just because I do have an r3 with gtx460 for sale but in the games I played it was more than enough for me. Personally if I ordered another i would get the 460 over the 6990 too. the 60 hz panel blows. Every day I used it I was using Fn+brightness to make sure it was up all the way.

It's just me but i wouldnt buy an ugly car with power. I'd buy a Beautiful car without as much power.

why not.. give them a call and find out? then tell the rest of us.

fyi though, please don't insult my intelligence while simultaneously using 'where' in place of 'were'

If cards are in stock you can buy one but 850-1000 dollars for 1 card is alot of money.

You could also buy another system swap the XM/RAM/HDD and sell the system with the 460m.

Prices arent bad in Europe now since Dell lowered them.

Some configs are even cheaper in Europe than the US.

Ok I think no one saw my last post. Does anyone have any idea when the 580m will be available with the 120hz display and 3d in the states. I am returning my m17x right now and was going to get the 6990, however if the 580m 3d will be available within the next few weeks I will wait and purchase that. But if it isn't going to be available for another month or two then i will have to go with the 6990. Anyone know or have any type of information on this?

I totally hear you on the importance of the display. I will be using it for imaging work, to some extent. However, all of the Dell documentation I've found (link I posted earlier on page 4 of this thread) states that all the specs are identical for the two 1080p panels, except for the refresh rate and the extra brightness. The gamut numbers are identical. Are there benchamarks somewhere that indicate otherwise?

I am still looking into 2 different notebooks for my family. As such, I dug into this a bit this weekend. I called 3 seperate times talking to different reps each time. Each time I was told they could not configure the 3D with the 580M. I explained that I could do it on the UK site, but that made no difference. I am not saying your wrong, but that I had no success.
