1440p output over Displayport?

I've recently been considering a new monitor, and was looking at the Korean IPS panels that have been making the rounds recently, and I was wondering if the miniDisplayport on the r3 would support 1440p output. Has anyone tried this? Any luck? (not really looking to game on it, more just for fitting more code on one screen)

And I'm assuming it would be run off of my 560m, not the Intel HD 3000- though I have heard that the Intel IGPs on the 2011/2012 MBAs will support 1440p. Absolutely no chance of gaming if that is the case though

 

I am pretty sure you would be ok with display port.

You'll either need a mini DP to DP cable if you'll buy a monitor with DP in (more expensive but they have a scaler).
Or, and i recommend this, getting a miniDP to dual-link DVI active adapter. You may need to get a miniDP to DP cable and the DP to dual link DVI adapter separately.

 

As Katalin said, you shouldn't have any issue. If you are buying a monitor with a DP in, you won't need the active adapter. I'm running my U3011 with just a mini DP to DP cable with no problem at 2560x1600. If the monitor doesn't have a DP in, you'll need to run with the adapter as using HDMI won't cut it...not enough bandwidth to run that resolution at 32bit colour - maybe 16bit. Also, the iGFX of the HD3000 and HD4000 will allow for that resolution too - I'm running my iGFX right now and my monitor is fine at 2560x1600. Both iGFX versions support max. res of 2560x1600.

I think I'll just be getting a monitor with DP- they don't seem to be much more expensive (like $50 more) and I would like the ability to connect a console to it... (which the DVI-only ones don't really support, no scaling)

Awesome! Are there any obvious FPS/stuttering issues when running on the IGP? Though I think I'll be using the dedicated card whenever I'm connected (as I'll be off battery).

If I end up getting one (probably will, but if it's a choce between that and a 8970m/780m, I might have some trouble) I'll post about how it works- and I might end up testing on one of my school's computer monitors if they have the relevant connections. (For some reason, University of Michigan has 1440p monitors in the higher-end computer labs. Not about to argue though!)

 

Well, to be honest, I don't game on iGFX so I couldn't tell you about stutter/FPS drop. I imagine that as gaming is hard enough to do on iGFX at high settings, adding an even higher resolution would only hinder performance and you probably would suffer from trying to game at 2560x1440 whilst using iGFX. If you are close enough to hook up an external, running iGFX to game is a futile exercise, really.......it's good if you are on the move with only the laptop, but why suffer when you are in proximity of your external display - just hook up the juice, crank up the discreet card and away you go!!!

Yup. Sure does. Running 2560x1600 right now on iGFX (HD3000) over MiniDP to DP.
