Hi guys, I have been using a 1600 X 900 screen in my M15x all my laptop life and was wondering if the 1600 X 900 screen or 1920 X 1080 screen is the better choice to go with in the AW 17 model. Is the 1920 X 1080 that "much" more better than the 1600 X 900 screen? What advantages will I see apart from getting less frame rates because of the higher resolution? Also will my 720P movies still be watchable on a 1920 X 1080? Or will the quality be a little bit worse?

    Option 1: 17.3" (439.42 mm) WLED HD+ Anti-Glare Display (1600 X 900)
    Option 2: 17.3" (439.42 mm) WLED FHD Anti-Glare Display (1920 X 1080)

    Hey!

If you read through the first part of http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-17-m17x/758711-120hz-3d-screen-upgrade-alienware-17-a.html It might answer some of your questions and offer another suggestion again. In terms of is it better, the simple answer is hell yes. The differences between the two screens is a lot more then just the resolution and you should absolutely be getting the 1080p sceen at the very least, and in fact I would highly recommend the 120Hz 3D option as well but that may require a different tier that your now ready to buy into. The 1080p screen has much better color and contrast then the 1600 screen and in comparison the 1600 screen just seems washed out and dead and a lot of people that come through here actually end up upgrading the screen afterwards to the 1080p 60Hz model at the very least, if not the 120Hz option. If you are getting the Nvidia cards then the 120Hz 3D option if you best bet as even the difference between the 60Hz and the 120Hz is quite a large improvement for those of us who have invested in it and or have done the upgrade and have personally seen the difference. If your going with an AMD card then the 120Hz isn't an option and the 1080p 60hz is as good as it gets.

I had the 1080p 60Hz to begin with in my 17 and it isn't a bad screen by any means but I wasn't a large fan of the matte finish that comes on them as I find it washes out the color compared to the glossy screens. I had the 1600 screen in my R4 when they replaced my first R4 and they had to do the upgrade to the 1080p after I received the machine so I lived with the 1600 for a few days and I didn't like it at all, it looked terrible IMO.

Most people on here will say the same thing, the 1080p option is a must on these machines. The only time I can see not getting the 1080 is if your going with a lower end GPU and pushing the FPS could be problematic at 1080p resolutions but then everyone here will suggest the top tier GPU as an essential upgrade as well :p

Thanks for the detailed reply MogRules! I will definitely get the 1920 X 1080 screen then! I will be running this with a i7 4910MQ and a GTX 780M. My only concern now is that will the 1920 X 1080 screen make my 720P blu rays look bad? Because everything I have is in 720P like my tv series and movies and everything else!

Blurays come in 720? lol..... unless you are referring to downloaded files. But either way they will look just fine, I don't even think you will notice.

The 1080p screen offers better specs beyond resolution which make it a better option.

I completely agree with MogRules, having a higher resolution screen is a must on these machines. You will not regret.

For me anything below 1920x1080 in tablets and computers is unacceptable.
