Right click on the desktop, click on Screen resolution, select 1600x900, click on Apply, then OK. Done. Or do you mean swap out the screen itself for the lower resolution monitor?

    When did you buy it?
If you're still in your return window ( 7, 21, 30 days, depending on your location) just return it and reorder with the screen you want.
If you're over the return window try to work with Dell to swap it and maybe pay the difference.

I don't think that buying the panel separately would be worth it though.

If I were you I would scan for dead pixels. If you have I believe it is 3-4 or more, they will replace your screen. Just try to see if you can pay the difference for the upgrade to the 1080P.

Maybe from Dell I saw a site a few weeks back that sold them for like $150 for the 1080p display.

Well if it's like the M17x, M17x R2, M18x etc. Than trust me it is with something like the 3M double sided tape.

I know this might not be the solution the OP is looking for, but how about plugging it into a bigger LCD monitor?

I'm thinking of purchasing a M17x with the 1600x900 screen as well but mine will stay rooted on my desk so hooking up a monitor isn't a problem for me.
