It WORKS!!
I tried with 1333mhz Hynix ram that came with my precision M6600.
The bios does not recognize it and shows as 0mb.
But windows property shows full 16gb, so does task manager! It seems stable.. Precision M6500 was able to be configured with 16gb of ram. I guess the question was if one slot can support a 8gb stick. But it does!
I hate all those of you who said it cant go 16gb lol... Another reason to keep the R2!!!!

4gb per slot is supposed to be a limitation of the intel chipset as per intel themselves.
Can you provide proof that more than 8gb are being used? Run a crap load of programs and games and take a screen shot of your tskmanager ram usage. Also temporarily set your page file size to 0 for the test. -
Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
i ma do that. I will use snipping tools. How can i prove that the machine is r2? please tell me how i can do this.
Also i am not familiar with resizing pics. The file will likely to have 1080+ resolution.
ran windows index test. with 940xm throttlestop at 3.33ghz 4 cores and this ram, it is 7.5, 7.5 -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
i suspect that you are only using 8 gigs of ram with the other 8 ignored

ok so i was caching bunch of games. as soon as i exited out MW3, it got all black, and i couldnt do cnt alt delete. after like 10-15 seconds i got BSOD....
0x000000a...
Is this ram related? I had bout 4 games cached before MW3. It reboots fine though.
apparently this can be due to memory. I JUST got this ram as my second M6600 was delivered this morning. Should I run memtest? Anyone have direct link to the software I can download to run memtest?
Thanks. Just trying to share the results with the community -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
100% run memtest...you'll need to burn a cd with it and boot from cd

"STOP 0x000000A" Stop error when there is a request to allocate a large amount of contiguous physical memory in Windows Server 2008 R2 or Windows 7
Definitely RAM related (or cpu related). Might be that after the first 8gb is used up, windows can't access the second 8gb and faults. -
ratchetnclank Notebook Deity
I think windows tried to address the ram and the chipset couldn't hence the BSOD.
Memtest could be an idea but i doubt bad sticks are the cause. -
Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
let me try this guys give me some time. ill post back
Edit: that first BSOD seems to be due to corrupted file games. task manager has less than 8gb free space for ram. Ill post pic soon hang on.... -
8GB sticks of RAM are never recommended
I can't remember where I read this but 4GB per stick is the best choice
Just seems it will work, but just not well enough to be a permanent solution - bit like some people having problems with 1866Mhz on the R3 -
Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
It seems that first BSOD was really corrupted file game. When opening all these, it was quite stable! the hdd was quite slow though but not too bad.. really felt similar speed as 8gb 1333mhz.
MODS: Please understand that I really do not know how to resize. And I am too excited to care about it ATM since I know all the R2 owners want to know whats up!!Attached Files:

I live in a boarding school and I dont have a cd with me.. Computer center is not open yet since school starts tomorrow...
Anyway I can run as exe?? help
can i try the F12 diagnostic and run the long version of memtest? SHOULD I DO THIS?
I am too excited someone plz help! -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
The new version of memtest 4.1 and higher support booting from USB stick...try that
-
Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
i really cant figure this memtest thing out. I am just running the built in diagnostic with the prolonged version for memory test. will post back.
mods: please do not emerge this with owners thread. Not just yet...
meanwhile, is there anything else I can try to check stability on windows? -
ratchetnclank Notebook Deity
Open four games at once try and max it to 16GB and then open some more, see how it does with page filing too.
-
Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
let me try maxing out. ill report what happens when its full

here dude, download, burn, restart with DVD -

Graz: like i said, I dont have a blank cd...
Anyways, in windows 16gb of very stable. I have opened everything that I can to max out the ram, but I couldnt because I dont have enough programs.. I opened like a billion hulu and youtube tabs but at some point the browsers were no longer eating up ram.
this is what I got up to... like i said, programs are solid stable. my hdd is screaming for help though. lol.
I ran diagnostic in F12. everything is solid. Unless anyone can dispute:
At this point, I have to admit that 16gb WORKS for the R2Attached Files:

Not saying it doesn't work, but according to intel it shouldn't work.
Intel® Core? i7-940XM Processor Extreme Edition (8M Cache, 2.13 GHz)
Max memory size - 8gb.
# of memory channels - 2.
Unless that means 8gb per channel, but if that's the case it would probably have been worded differently.
IDK why but I'm hesitant. I'd like to see it replicated (perhaps even by myself) and thoroughly tested. I'd like to see what cpu-z reports under the memory tab and what HWinfo reads.
MemTest for Windows Download Page
Download and run MANY instances of 2047mb allocated memtests. Use that to push the usage near to 16gb. -
Dellienware Workstations & Ultrabooks
i will post hwinfo and cpuz. ill try that memtest if it doesnt require booting from cd.
anything else i can try? with using programs, it is very stable. this is very strange -
Watch your usage and don't let it exceed 100% (could cause a BSOD). All I want to see is 70-80% usage of the 16gb. Because the 51% usage you showed before is easily attainable if only one 8gb stick is being used completely and some of the 600mb pagefile is being used as well - eventhough the second 8gb stick can't be addressed.
Also if you could post shots of both modules under the SPD tab in cpu-z ... -
We already established 16GB in the owners lounge, or was it the 6970 guide. Can't remember. But reborn already provided screen shots
But good job. My kit was ordered a week ago.

Cool good to know it's been duplicated!
Perhaps I should check the owners lounge now and then. -

Lol Nah its all good though. My kit should be in today or tomorrow. Great minds think alike.
My 16gb kit came in today -
Does it feel any snappier?
-
TurbodTalon Notebook Virtuoso
I'm obviously ordering a 16GB ASAP because I'm a sucker, but 4GB is still overkill. 16GB? Uhh...yeah...
-
Can anyone provide a link to a kit compatible with the R2? Would be greatly appreciated.
-
I got the Corsair 1333mhz value ram from new egg. Good price and Corsair makes quality stuff. Any 1333mhz kit will work.
-
It has to be under Laptop Memory and it has to be 2x8 gig sticks right? Can you link it?
-
TurbodTalon Notebook Virtuoso
I just looked Weinstein, I can't find the Corsair 16GB kit either. You can buy two 8GB sticks individually though.

RAm I am using is Hynix 1333mhz that came with precision M6600. But I think the corsair should work as corsair 2x4gb 1333mhz worked.
-
Next will be 32gig when they become available
-
Here is the corsair Kit I got. Although when I ordered it, it had a $25 off promo. Although the price of the kit already dropped $5 since I bought it. At least I still got it it $20 cheaper and no shipping. Man I hate the rate tech drops in value. Oh well, my system is still sweet

Thanks guys, mine arrived today. They're in and working
I bought from ebuyer.com in the uk - LINK
It was £40.57 +vat per module. Today it seems to have gone
Thanks for the heads up. This R2 just gets better and better.

Thanks man, yea the R2 definately is a one of a kind system. I have mine all kinds of decked out and have changed it so much it in no way resembles the stock system I purchased.
I bought: Black M17x R2, i5 520M, 5870 Crossfire, 4GB 1066MHz, Bluray Burner, N6300 Wireless, 250GB 5400RPM HDD.
Since purchase: See sigSwapped the Chasis for a silver one, which is gorgeous.
-
what's benefit from 16gb?
-
If you run virtual systems, they tend to use a lot or RAM, same with Adobe products. Also, as Svl7 stated at T|I, the R2 probably reads 0MB in the bios with 16GB because at the time the R2 was released, 8GB RAM sticks were not available. There for there is no line for 16GB in the BIOS. So if the BIOS 0MB reading has you skeptical, don't be. Remember the R2 was released in what, early 2010? It's still a powerhouse system
-
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Or as DR650SE mentioned, multiple VM's chew up RAM like nothing you've ever seen. -
Will this work in an R1?
-
-
what about Kingston HyperX 1600 8GB x 2? or 1333 only?

Dr, have you noticed any difference from 8 to 16Gb of ram?
i have a magazine with me, and it is written on it that they performed a test with a desktop with 6 and 12 Gb of ram. they recorded an improvment in game of about 5% with the 12Gb config vs the 6 one.
well if it is true, 5% is not bad at all
Anyway my 16Gb kit is already at home waiting for me(along with a galaxy note which i'm not supposed to know being my birthday present
)
-
Not too sure, havn't had much time to actually use it, although lastnight I had it over 4GB used in the RAM and didn't notice any slowing down. I need to RMA my 8GB Gskill, so I had my 1333MHz 4GB Hyper X in it. With 16GB I had a ton of stuff open and no slow downs. But again, I havn't gamed on it since swapping the RAM.
-
Sigh...you guys keep me spending money...
Not that I'm complaining -
Yea I had the same thoughts, but it's nice to have tons of resources and bragging rights
Now I can start playing with VMware more.
I may try out Windows 8 in VMware if it's possible.
