I tried installing a new 1070 into my 17r1 that previous ran GREAT with a 980m, upon first boot the 1070 was no where to be seen so I was going to chalk it up to a bad GPU.

Going back to the 980m.... bios isn’t recognizing that card either now... I don’t know what’s going on...

I’m not sure what I need to do at this point but if neither card is working I’m stumped

What display are you using, and does the BIOS say Not detected with both cards, or does it say NVIDIA GFX?

My original 60hz which I was using the with the 980m originally. I was going to upgrade to the 120hz next week and was told this was fine in multiple forums, I never got error codes.

When I saw the 1070 as ‘not detected’ in the bios and not showing up in device manager I figured it was just the card was bad. Reinstalling the 980m and that doing the same thing is concerning.

It shows up as not detected for both of them. I could try my 860m but I’m going to assume the same thing will happen

First thing I would do is to inspect the MXM slot. make sure there isn’t anything thing in it. If it looks good and you still get the not detected issue, try reinstalling the 60hz display and see if you can recognize them. Having the unlocked BIOS would help as you can more easily switch between PEG and SG modes.

The 980m has a blown resister on the backside and almost burnt through the plastic, found it this morning. The 860m works so I know the 980m is done and the 1070 I’m not even messing with at this point.

I’m just going to return the 1070, and the 120hz screen/cable return the laptop to stock and then sell it and sort out my heatsinks, 1tb msata, processors, and 4x8gb 1600mhz ram and be done with it

That sucks. Good luck parting it out. If you can manage to find an MSI 1070, and are willing to cut the chassis, it will work quite well. Those MSI ones are built insanely well.
