Hey guys, i really need help with my laptop. Recently, i reinstalled windows 7 cleanly and everything was working fine. Except for the fact that when i chose to shut down, restart, or hibernate, from the computer, it would log off my windows, and all but it would just stop on a black screen with the computer turned on. So i would have to manually hold the power button for it to shut down. (Any idea whats wrong please help) However, everything else was working fine.

(MAIN PROBLEM) Except though, when i unplugged my AC Adapter from the computer for about an hour max, and plugged it back in, my computer froze. So i restarted it, with the charger plugged in, and logged back in, it said that i was running on battery, and that it cannot recognize this AC Adapter, even though its the one dell shipped with my laptop. So i digged through the internet, and tried cleaning out my registry, Power draining, system restore, virus scans, but this only lead to the same problem. Now, my laptop(with charger plugged in) will only get to the windows is loading screen,(the one with windows colours forming the flag) and it would just go to a black screen with a mouse in the middle, which i cannot move. It just stays like that forever.

Funny thing is, my laptop will still get charged, when my laptop is turned off and the Charger is plugged in, so my battery will go to 100%. Also, if i don't plug in my charger and start the laptop, it will work perfectly fine(until the battery dies). Everything runs well, except when i plug in my charger, then the screen will just freeze and do nothing, in which i have to hold down the power button to shut it down. I'm pretty sure its not my charger that is faulty, because my friend's m17x can be started and charged fine with my charger. It might have been that i did not install the proper drivers or not all the needed drivers that is causing this problem, however I have no idea what to do. It seems that the only time my laptop isn't working is when my AC adapter is plugged in and my laptop is started.

I have no idea what is wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It seems that when i run it in any 3 of the safe modes, everything seems fine even with the AC adapter plugged in. Maybe its screen resolution?

I think you would get better results if you post in the m17x section since you have an m17x :)
EDIT: nevermind. sorry about that :)

Just before Windows start to load, spam F5 and try to enter Safe Mode. Does that work?

Oles Chiefs. Wasn't it SPAM "F8" eheheheh :p :p ;) :p :p to bring up the SAFE mode menu. :D
Your right though F5 used to work for the older OS's. Not sure why or when they changed! Oles!

You can also set it to go into safe mode through msconfig under the boot tab.

Nice pic BTW, who is that LOL! ???

    Cheers. :)

This sounds like a problem that the new VBIOS would fix oles.

What are your Notebook SPECs chief? If they include the 5870 GPUs then you will need to install Dells new GPU drivers and then update the vbios.

    Cheers. :)

I just did a re - imaging of my partitions, and it seemed to have fixed the charger problem, however, my computer will not shutdown or restart properly. It will just say logging off, shutting down, and it will go to a black screen with the computer still running. It was restarting and shutting down fine, until i installed the AMD Mobility Radeon HD5870 and the vBios drivers. Any ideas?

Ah okay cool cool. I have a better picture of things now.

Alright lets see here. Have you updated to the latest System bios A09?

+ Dells newest GPU drivers and then the new vbios Update for the 5870 GPU?

If not yet I would Highly recommend doing the above 3 updates. It should fix all your problems.

    Cheers. :)

    You can get the goods over here;

    Latest System BIOS Downloads

    Dell - Support

Make sure you have the new dell driver installed 1st as well before you use the vbios update.

    Dell - Support

I would update the system bios 1st to A09 and then install the new dell driver and then do the vbios update.

Also make sure you uninstall the previous old GPU drivers 1st. Give it a nice clean using driver sweeper and cc cleaner in safe mode before you restart back into normal OS windows mode and install the new Dell Drivers.

    Cheers. :)

Hmmmsss very odd chiefs. I would suggest you try doing another clean install of the GPU drivers.

It sounds like theres some driver corruption or something. Very odd indeed chiefs. Hmmsssss!
You installed the dell GPU driver 1st correct and then updated to the Vbios?

If you need to get back into windows because its BSOD looping on you hit F8 like you would to get the SAFE mode menu up and then choose the last known good configuration that worked option.

    Cheers. :)

Sorry, i'm very nooby when it comes to this stuff, so please bear with me lol.
What do you mean another clean install of GPU Drivers?
Should i uninstall the GPU drviers, (what are they specifically) then reinstall them, or should i just download the gpu drivers again?

No worries chiefs. Happy to help out. No need to be sorry!

Okay can you read my updated msgs above again. I just added more stuff in.

So about the GPU drivers. Can you send me a pic of GPU-z. I just want to check something.

About the GPU drivers I would suggest you do a clean install again. So uninstall them and then run driver sweeper and CC cleaner in safe mode. Then restart back into the normal OS mode and then install the GPU drivers again.

    Cheers :)

AH i see. So you haven't updated to the new vbios then chiefs. Is that correct?

If so then yeh thats the cause of the problems. Okay so are you able to get back into windows now?

If not try the last know working configuration technique I suggested above.
If it still BSODs then you will just have to go into Safe mode and uninstall the GPU drivers driver sweeper and CC clean them. Then restart back into normal OS mode and install the dell GPU drivers again. Make sure you are plugged into the ac adapter the whole time. Do not unplug at any given moment.

Then now try updating the vbios again.

    Cheers. :)

AH okay. Yeh that is a known problem when you have the new GPU driver installed but without the vbios installed as well.

So yeh you will need to go and update the vbios chiefs. Then all your woes will be KOed.

    Cheers. :)

how do i reinstall and install my vbios driver, when i cannot successfully restart or shutdown my computer?
And just now, i unplugged my AC Adapter, to see if the problem still persisted, and when i plugged it back in, the power bar sign showed the little plugged in sign, and the blue battery is charging sign, but it froze after a couple of seconds. However, after i manually restarted it, i was able to get past the black screen with immovable cursor and log on which is a new step i guess. Still though, i am kind of scared to try and unplug the power cord again, as it might screw it up and cause more unneeded problems.

    Yep chiefs,

Its much better you don't go unplugging the notebook right now just yet. Save that for after you update the vbios eheheh :p ;)

Okay now you will need to get back into windows.
Then download the vbios update program.
    Run it.
Follow the instructions to create a bootable usb flash drive or cd/rom media disk. Choose which ever one you want. If you choose to use the USB route you flash drive needs to be no bigger than 2gb. Otherwise is won't work for you when trying to create the vbios flash updater.

Once you have done the creation of the usb flash drive or cd/r media. Restart your machine and then hit F12 to load up the boot menu. From there select either usb bootable flash or cd/rom option and follow the on screen instructions to successfully flash your vbios. So press B and the let it do its thing then once done it should say hit any key to restart and then VioLa your done TADA. THen you should be good to go after that. Oles! :D

    Cheers. :)

my USB is only 550mb ='( Would that still suffice?
Also, the problem with this is that my computer cannot properly restart. It will log off and say shutting down, then it will just go to a black screen and the computer is still running. Is it because i didn't press "Finish Creating Media"?

So you can't get back into windows chiefs?

Yeh 550mb usb flash drive is more than enough to suffice. It will work fine.

Did you keep hitting F12 when you restart the notebook to bring up the boot menu and the select the usb bootable flash drive. Then flash the vbios?

    Cheers. :)

No, i can get into windows, its just that i would have to hold down the power button manually. But this causes problems with vbios download. So when you say "Restart your machine and then hit F12 to load up the boot menu." i would not be able to get there properly, unless i manually hold down the power button.
