Might have to uninstall the alienware osd. I personally formatted so I don't have that bugging me.

Funny that on my first r3 with Dell ssd the volume buttons worked ALWAYS no matter what program or game or video I was watching full screen or windowed. On my 2nd r3 I got the hdd and it would do the same for me in Warcraft 3. I play TFT and on the first one with ssd the volume bars would just appear above everything and adjust. Not sure why though. First machine was 3d gtx 460 2nd was 6970. Maybe a gpu Thing ?

it does this because when you hit the volume button, a little box comes up to the forefront to show you your level of volume....this is not a defect of the R3, just the way windows works....Dell would need to suppress the box from popping up in order to "fix" this....perhaps a future version of OSD, who knows

This shouldn't happen. The app is designed to function in the background without stealing focus.

Make sure you have the current OSD installed. Link is here:

    Alienware OSD v0.31.0.8C for M17xR3
    Drivers and Downloads

You can also try the M18x version - v0.31.0.14C
It will not break anything however if any 'weirdness' is encountered, just uninstall and reinstall the 17xR3 version.
    Drivers and Downloads

Post back results after you confirm this occurs using the current version of OSD for the R3.

I know that if you can force your game to DX 9 it won't happen. Not a REAL solution, but a solution.

It's glitchy for me. Sometimes it minimizes, sometimes it doesn't (during games or watching a movie on WMP). If it doesn't minimize, I don't see the box that pops up indicating volume. When it minimizes, that box pops up. It never pops up/minimizes during BFBC2 or SC2 or Dolphin/PCSX2 fyi.

same here when i first got my R3 it was giving me the same problem on crysis 2 and portal 2,

After a few days of using the laptop this issue doesn't occur anymore, i didn't install any drivers, except carried out an windows update which i think after that the issue stopped.
