I upgraded my win 7 to win 10, everything went fine till nvidia decided not to work anymore. in 2015 I had a 580M, it burned up so I had to switch. I tried driver uninstall and these pages but it still doesn't work: https://premamod.wordpress.com/2017/08/15/j95-nvidia-inf/ ; https://null-src.com/posts/nvidia-notebook-driver-inf-mod/post.php
Somehow the grahpic card itself isn't detected, it says Microsoft basic display adapter.

I went through some other forums and people had these issues for quite some time and it seems to be unresolved. My guess is that Win10 hasn't the combination saved, so it might be a similar issue like the inf modding of the Nvidia drivers. However I'm no Microsoft programmer. In one forum a guy returned to Win7 and everything went back to normal. I did the same thing, now back on Win7.

With M17x you usually have to disable the HD audio in the BIOS before installing the card. Did you try that?
Also, did you disable driver signature enforcement before installing the modded driver?
If it says Microsoft Basic Display Adapter then that should be your Nvidia Card with no driver. Does it say Nvidia GFX in the BIOS? -
Yes, I disabled HD audio and disabled driver signature enforcement and in the Bios it showed the Nvidia card. However in Windows it still says “Microsoft basic display adapter” and when I try to install a driver it says something like no relevant hardware was found so “Microsoft basic display adapter” is the best driver that was found.

You need to modify the video driver for it to recognize the card. -
Hi there, I'm trying to use modified drivers since 2015. When I installed the GTX680M in 2015 I used driver vers: 3221 or 2960.10 (not sure). Other drivers din't seem to work correctly back then. Still have like 8 old drivers in a folder whom have been modified, but these didn't work correctly (game graphic issues, bluescreens, BSoD etc).
Now on the weekend when I went back to Win7, I installed the modified driver ver: 24.21.13.9836. Strangely it worked this time, only minor issues on GTA5 (glitches). Interestingly in the hardware manager it doesn't say GTX680M but "%NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.068B.1028%".
Coming back to Win10, yes I tried using modified drivers, however it still says in the driver installation process something like relevant hardware not found. Maybe I was not modifying correctly, I don't know. -
Are you modding the driver yourself? It sounds like you haven't quite got the process right. The process should be something like this (assuming you already know how to make your new hardware ID code in the inf);
- Go to Nvidia and download the latest 680M driver (will be a little bit old now) EDIT - Driver 425.31 is the latest for your card
- Use DDU in Safe mode to remove previous driver
- Install the driver and let it fail but do not close down the installer
- Find the new NVidia driver folder and make a copy (I usually name in NVidia Mod)
- Close down the Installer and the original NVidia folder should vanish
- find the Dell inf file in the Display folder
- Use your hardware ID found in Device Manager to insert your machine/GPU combo into the inf.
NOTE: The inf will have multiple sections to place your Hardware ID code for Windows 7, 8 and 10. I always put my code into each section rather than finding the right section. This could be where you are going wrong.
- Find the Strings section and insert your Hardware ID (copying the layout of the other strings) You could also be missing this step
- Save inf and exit
- Restart/Shift and startup with Driver Signature Enforcement Disabled.
- Run the setup in your modded Nvidia folder
- Allow the installation to continue when the red/white warning pops up -
Okay, I think I've managed to pull it off, thanks guys. Strangely in the hardware manager it doesn't say GTX680M but "%NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.068B.1028%". Is that bad?
-
That is your Device ID for the GPU and PC. Can you post a screenshot?

It's a little strange that it doesn't show the proper card name there. I'm guessing it has something to do with the modded driver. If it is working properly then you shouldn't worry too much. The 11A0 refer's to the 680M, the 068B should be your machine code and 1028 is the Dell/Alienware code.
-
It does seem like in the modded driver, where the section with all the hardwardeIDs and model names are, you might have put the hardware ID as the model name by mistake?
Rengsey R. H. Jr. likes this. -

I had this outcome before. But it did not bother me as it ran fine.

I am not at home to check, but it's the section where you have equations listed that contain:
Hardware ID = "nVidia GTX 1070"
Hardware ID = "nVidia GTX 1070 Max-Q"
Hardware ID = "nVidia GTX 1080"
Etc etc
I suspect you might have put the below in yours...
Hardware ID = "hardware ID"
