I have a 2013 Alienware 17r1 running Windows 10. Recently, when I open the lid/display past 75° to 80° (less than 90°) the display cuts out. The machine is still on but the display just turns off. When I pull it back to less than 90° it comes right back on. Is there a sensor in the hinge assembly or is there another place in need to look?

    Thank you for any assistance

Like everyone else said, bad cable. Might be worth opening up and reseating the LCD-side EDP cable, but other than that you'll probably have to replace it.

If you have the 120hz panel you're pretty likely to be able to source one from Dell for under $30 provided you're willing to DIY(at least in the US), i got one off of them ~3 weeks ago.

I pulled it apart and checked the connections, no go. I replaced the display wiring, no go. I didn't see anything that was pulling or getting pinched when I open the lid/cover/display. I'm stumped.

Only other thing it could be, provided the issue is only when you move the lid, is the LCD itself? Pretty unusual but i cant quite think of anything else

What is the mechanism that tells the computer to start up and the screen to come on when the lid is opened? Is there something that maybe getting a bad connection?

There is nothing on the hinge that I am aware of, The only things in the panel are the panel, cable, usb connection for webcam / mic, and WLAN antenna.

Most laptops have a magnet somewhere to tell it when its closed. You could probably disable your screen turning off when it is closed to test if thats the issue

AW17 does use magnets, they are up by the HDD activity/WiFi/Capslock corner of the palmrest. AW18 also uses magnets by the Windows 7/Intel sticker on the palm rest on the lower righthand corner, if anyone's interested.

Protip: You can trigger these switches with a decently strong magnet and make the laptop think the lid is closed.
