I was recently with some business colleagues and we turned on our computers at roughly the same time and I had logged in, started Outlook, written a quick email and shut down again before theirs has even got to the log in screen. I was interested then as to just how quick my laptop does start so I timed it and from pressing the 'On' button to 'Log-In' screen was 27 seconds. This is not a 'stripped down' racing computer used for benchmarks but my 'everday' work computer. How does that compare to others out there?

24.5 seconds from cold start to desktop....could probably shave 1 or 2 off if I didn't need to type a pass code at the windows login screen.

20.3 on my wife's Lenovo work/school PC including typing the password. This thing is hardly stripped down lol it annoys me how much stuff shes has on it.

I know it's not an alienware but I was browsing the section hoping to see when they update to 980m :p

Makes me wonder how much I could shave off if I loaded up in UEFI and used fast boot.

I have a 60GB mSATA caching my 2TB drive so it loads up the RAID drivers; which is what I guess your set up is too Mog. That must add a couple of seconds. Anyway I am still pretty pleased with my 27 seconds considering the amount of junk that is on it. I go get the occasional sideways look from my colleagues at the AW17 as they use the company 14" Dells.

I have heard that Win 8 boots faster but I think I will stick with Win 7 until 10 gets here and is proved to be good.

mine is about 20 seconds for the 17 w/ 256 msata, my desktop is 4 seconds from switch to steam big picture mode on and ready :)

Its a bare computer with nothing on startup but os and steam.

My OS is on a 120 GB OCZ Vertex drive. My mSATA only caches the 750gb storage drive that I run my games from :)

That will be the fast boot :p It really does wonders :) I am contemplating re-installing the tech preview with UEFI and fast boot.

EDIT: Re-installed 10 on UEFI with Fast boot enabled, cuts the boot time from cold down to 14ish seconds.
