    is .1 of a difference enough to justify a $200.00 upgrade? will i ever even notice the difference? its not really about the cost difference........i can cover the $200.00 BUT is it worth it?

    im about to order and im just covering all my bases first........

    thanks!

    The consensus all over this forum is that the 2720 is worth the upgrade, and the 2820 is not. Based on my research here, and other places, I made my choice accordingly.

    ALot of people will also say Neither, because of they wanna go with the Extreme Chip. I only went with the 2720 because they charged me like 100 dollars for it, and it didn't really bother me to get that after they knocked off the shipping for me. :D

    I would say, save your money instead. As you can see in my spec I have the I7 740qm and it has never been a bottleneck. The new i7 2720 is ALOT faster than my cpu, so if you are a casual user (like me) it will be more than enough.

    I contemplated the 2820QM when I placed my order, but decided that two bills wasn't worth 100MHz, personally. Sometime down the line I'll upgrade to the 2920XM if the price gets down low enough, I guess.

    Depends on what the lappy will mainly be for...

    I got the 2630QM because it is not only better then the previous i7 940XM(or w.e its called) it handles pretty much everything.

    Now, if your going to be doing lots of editing, the 2720QM will do the job since it supports 1600 on top of 1333 RAM chips. The 2820QM though is just a waste, unless your one of those "Laptops are only for benchmarking" kind of guys...

    I'm curious about this as well, so meaning the price does not justify the performance gain right?

    I'm curious about the cache size, 6mb vs 8mb, in what application will this feature be noticeable?

    I was thinking there would be less battery life with the 2820QM over the 2720. Would it be a noticeable difference?

    When I placed my order i decided the 2720QM the best processor, the 2820 was really to overprice to justify selecting it being $350 more from the base price configuration while the 2720 was only $150.

    Go with 2720qm in my opinion. Save those two green bills for a year down the road, and then buy a 2920xm off ebay. For the casual user, the 2720qm is more than enough

    Here's a comparison from Intel of 2820QM, 2720QM and 2630QM although they don't seem to put all the features on their chart...

    It looks like the 2630QM doesn't have:
    * Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d)
    * Intel® Trusted Execution Technology
    * AES New Instructions
    * DDR3-1600 support
    * Intel® Quick Sync Video
    * Intel® InTRU™ 3D Technology
    * Intel® Wireless Display

    well measure your boot time and you will know if you have a good boot time.

    seems to be the in thing about performance lol

    and I agree the 2820 is one step beyond, you'll never see the difference

    You're not only paying for a .1ghz increase in clock speed. You're also paying for a 2mb increase in cache. 6mb on the i7 2720qm and 8mb on the 2820qm.

    The extra cache will make quite a big difference in my opinion - and from experience.

    True. But i planned on just upgrading to a 2920xm or an ivy bridge when I feel the need to upgrade my processor. Plus I'm more a casual user, not a benchmarker or crazy overclocker.

    I don't believe you will notice a difference in battery life. Of course I could be wrong. :D I personally chose the 2720 as well because the 2mb of cache and 100mhz difference wasn't justifiable for $200. I would rather put that money into a SSD or HyperX ram.

    You can probably do some comparisons between systems that have the 2720QM and 2820QM at the 3DMark site. I just can't see there being that much of a difference, personally. I'll have to do some searching of my own later in an attempt to satisfy my own curiosities.

    I Wonder how many of the people that recently put an order for an M17x-R3 are gonna cancel it and jump into the m18x bandwagon

    There is about a 20fps difference when the gpu is full taken out of equation at 1024x768 in world of conflict. This shows that the 2820qm is indeed more powerful...perhaps the extra cache comes into play. But for gamers, even the 2620qm shouldn't be bottlenecked by the 6970m. Check the google translated article below.

    Yep, this chart shows it perfectly. If money is not an issue, then 2820qm would be a nice upgrade, but as soon as you start to see the pricing/performance ratio, it becomes clear that the 2720qm is the "sweet spot".

    From 2630qm to 2720qm:

    20fps:$150 --> Simplifies to 1fps:$7.5

    From 2720qm to 2820qm:

    20fps:$200 --> Simplifies to 1fps:$10

    Not to mention, when moving from the 2630qm to the 2720qm, the 2720qm also offers some other added functionality: VT-d, Intel My Wifi, Intel WiDi, 4G WiMAX, Intel Anti-Theft.

    However, when moving from 2720qm to the 2820qm, there are no new features that are added.
