I'm not benchmark man so I can't help you with benchmarks, but regarding drivers I'm using now the newest from dell website 197.84 and they are much better (stable) than the last nvidia releases

but what about the performance? Iread that they have performance issues with certain games. though I don't play those listed games. would the 197.84 from dell have issues with assassin's creed 2 or NFS Shift?

    thanks,

That's incorrect. The m17x predated the M17 and is a custom chassis not made by Clevo. The m17x is area 51, the M17 is not and is of course a rebranded OCZ Whitebook.

    It goes....

    area 51 m17x
    M17
    M17x R1
    M17x R2

Congratulations on making the 285's work! I would love to see them work on the R2 also.

I knew it was the M17 before the M17X again, totally forgot about the area-51 prefix previously. Thanks.

    Area-51 m17x: made by Quanta
M17 (Flextronics W840DI): made by Flextronics (sold as a barebones in the US by OCZ but Alienware had their own contract with Flextronics)
M17x R1 "All Powerful" (Flextronics W850DI): made by Flextronics
M17x R2 "All Powerful" (Flextronics something after W850DI lol): made by Flextronics

Hope that clears up some of the confusion....Alienware has never MADE a laptop, but they do brand sell and support laptops ;)

    And congrats on the upgrade!

even though I work for a videogame company I don't spend much playing games at home, not that I do at work either of course (I'm a web designer BTW). I do spend time on hardware and software mods more than I do in gaming. not that I dislike it at all, but at least this justifyes why I am not so up to date with the latest titles. with this said, this is what I currently have around:

    flight simulator X
    assassin's creed 2
    need for speed shift
and just recently I bought a used version of AVATAR for 8 bucks, cause I wanted to see how the graphics looked like. I have to say the graphics are really cool but the game sucks badly.

please, can anyone help with settings for resident evil 5 benchmark and 3dmark06?

I would appreciate it a lot

    thanks,

I forgot to mention, I asked the person who sold me the 285m cards on ebay if it was ok for me yo mention his website, he said to spread the word out.

so I got the cards from "laptopmonkey" in UK but they shipped straight from Shanghay and I got them the same week. he also has some available on ebay right now.I guess these must be of a different batch cause mine were slightly cheaper. I paid them 289 each.

in fact I was originally looking for 280Ms in SLI but they are so expensive, so when I saw these it's when I started this thread to find out if they were compatible with the M17x. they were too good of a deal.

    thanks,

that's nice! I hope it works for your system too.
I bet if one works you'll go for the second one too, hah! good thing!
where did you get it from? laptopmonkey? the guy who sold me the cards is very nice and fast with all the processes! I'll definitely buy again from him.

if the SLI cable isn't compatible, I'll take pictures of mine and will show you what I did to trim the plastic without screwing it up.

pictures always speak for themselves, though I will briefly comment each one of them.

the picture "1.jpg" shows the SLI cable switch that goes in the card # 1 (in the top left hand side of the laptop).

notice what a big portion of plastic I had to remove from the sides. on top of that it also had two little wings (or arrows) that allowed it to clip in place in the socket for the 260m.

the picture "2.jpg" shows the other end of the SLI cable, which had to be trimmed as well. this one belongs to te second card.

the picture "3.jpg" shows the SLI socket for the 285m. notice how the sides come out in a V shape (you can't really tell from the shadows and the angle of the camera) and at the very end it forms a T with plastic aboundantly sticking out of the pins track.

the picture "4.jpg" shows the SLI socket that belongs to the 260m. compare it with the previous one.

the picture "5.jpg" shows the X metal bracket that belonged to the 260m and that I had to mount on the 285m. (courious thing here, one of the cards came here without the metal bracket, so if it wouldn't have been for the pair of 260m I would have had to buy or find one online, not an easy task I think).

finally the picture "6.jpg" shows the two vards in comparison one next to the other. except for that SLI socket and one or two resistors they look just the same.

    hope you enjoyed! :)
    thank you,

    can anyone answer this question:

do you know how to regulate the fan speed of the video card in the M17x?

I was able to undervolt with Nibitor and temperatures have decreased considerably, but I was wondering if anyone knew how to change those settings for the fan speed.

they are not grayed out (in Nibitor) they are simply empty but you can fill those menus in. the problem is that I don't know how, but also I believe they are simply not compatible with mobile cards. is any software out there that can do this?

    thank you,

thanks, I just installed it, and chose system performance from the three.

there's also system monitor and system update

the system performance gave me the option to overclock the GPU but the fan settings are grayed out.

    is that what you meant?

    can you recommend something else?

    thank you

thanks, I'll benchmark once I am done tweaking a few things. I am still finding the right voltage setting that I feel comfortable with. I guess for these cards it takes a bit longer for the fan to spin faster. it's understandable though, since they were originally made for clevos and laptops other than the M17x, the video bios must have different requirements for the fan, based on the cooling system they belong to.

thanks, whwat about Nibitor, nibitor allows me to change fan settings but I don't know what to put in it. I think I'll have to start a new thread.

I seriously doubt you will be able to change the fan table. I have tried a few ways with previous cards all resulting in failure

they are usually regulated in the Motherboard BIOS not the VBIOS

I think I have tested the cards long enough. they are 100% stable.

have not have a single crash with the latest nvidia drivers on nvidia's site.

now I understand how they work.

basically whenever the cards reach 70 degrees celcius is when the fan start to spin faster, although not that faster, cause it's still pretty quiet. then once they start they either slow down until they go below 60 or they keep going on keeping the cards between 59 - 61.

I have been able to reach a great low voltage while still keeping the cards at stock speeds 600/1500/1000

the voltage for the Extra clock entries came stock at 1.0V but I lowered it to 0.92V and still keeping the stock clock freq. this means that these cards can reach a much higher overclock even with the stock voltage and so on if set to 1.03V or more. thogh I will never set it any higher than 0.95 cause I am not interested in overclocking as much as I am in undervolting.

BTW, are these clocks accurate? 600/1500/1000 for stock values?
they came like that in the BIOS, but actually I lowered them to 550/1375/950 and rise them up to 600/1500/1000 if I have to run 3d applications.

I was reading on notebookcheck that the stock freq are lower for the core clock and just 20 mhz higer for the memory.

Why bother with the 285Ms in the first place?

The ATi Mobility 4870s are just as powerful according to benchmarks (4870 CrossfireX and 285M SLi is very very very close) and they'd be cheaper with no mods necessary to fit them in.

Still, for those that absolutely must have nVidia, then it's nice to know they work. Yet, I don't really believe they're a significant enough upgrade over 260M SLi to merit the massive cost, unless you're a major enthusiast gamer (in which case you'd likely have gone with 280Ms or 4870s to start with)

better drivers/ physx & physics support/ better Multi-gpu/ because you can. If I could switch my 5870s for some 285s I probally would considering the lack of driver functionality, and as I understand, 4870's are not much better in that regard.

Nvidia drivers tend to mesh better with many games (because nvidia helps write/optimize all the "the way its meant to be played" games). SLI also usually scales better than Crossfire. That being said, I enjoy my 4870s over my GTX 280m's :)

They are cooler and draw less power

ATI cards however do have more raw power.

Second - download and run this tool in the background while browsing the web and gaming - then post a screenshot. It will tell all if the latency is still there or was finally fixed.

Well out of those 3, I only had the GTX 280m in SLI. Granted I took them past stock GTX 285m clocks (still TECHNICALLY a different card.....lol at nvidia....)

Yeah, funny. Intel is also going that route...

BTW, Speedy did some 480M benching.
I do think a single 480M is about 260x2 (stock to stock and excluding the synthetics, only games)

Even in Vantage there's only about 1k of a difference.
