IdeaStorm | Bios support for the 2920XM on the M17x R3.
Please vote.![]()
From my point of view it would be very easy for Dell to offer it. The M18x has it, just add the option to the configurator and release a bios for it.
-
-
They probably won't. Considering they didn't support the 485 and skipped directly to the 580m T_T
-
If the idea got lots of vote's they might consider it.
Its worth the try. -
I'll throw in my vote anyhow.
-
Here you go: M17x r3 unlocked BIOS for 2920xm overclocking [BIOS works, untested with XM CPU]
Dell probably won't do this. It seems they want to keep it exclusive for the M18x. -
I've seen the modded bios, seems that its buggy.
Would be nice of Dell to offer it. M18x sales are really bad outside the US at the moment. Starting price is 2000 euro's, about 3400 dollars for the basic system.
And the M18x is a BIG laptop, way to big to be carrying arround all day. -
Of course an official BIOS from Dell would be preferable, but don't see this happening anytime soon. -
Plus the official bios from Dell will have throttling issues with the 580m. Best bet is to go with the modded A04, no power throttling and the XM CPUs will have TDP set to 99/99 so plenty potential.
-
I am certaintly up for this as I'd like to make better use of my "absolutely useless $1000+ CPU" lol, although as of yet I've had no real use for it based on my current usage but I got it for free so ..........
Pretty lame that the competition can offer it in machines half the price and we have to resort to modifying the OEM system BIOS to enable XM features, come on DELL we want this option so why not in A09 -
@Geoffxx when you run the A04 modified BIOS with the options unlocked, does the XM CPU unlock the grayed out boxes?
-
Dell probably didn't make a dual piped heatsink for it in the R3 and there for won't offer it due to the heat ot produces.
-
-
the r3 heatsinks are good to go. but atm i would rather have more voltage for the gpu. gave me a another 2 weeks, once i'm free i'm gonna test out the modded bios with an unlocked chip. fingers crossed.
-
-
I know the XM isnt that big of a deal compared to better GPU's but would be nice to at least have the option.
So people vote vote vote. -
-
Did anyone order m17x r3 with 2920 xm from Hidevolution.com ?
wondering what they do to support it ? -
Geoffx did but there is nothing extra you can do as of yet AFAIK.
Geoffx - Did you try running throttlestop to change any values? -
yes I did mate, it's all locked up by default, the only difference is the boost/turbo time and power - they can be set much higher with the XM chip
-
Seems like Geoffxx is the only one here with that CPU.
-
I would consider it more if there were BIOS support... as it is I may eventually still get a $300 ES version. More likely to upgrade to the next gen GPU next year though.

Still discussing it over at Ideastorm. Could use some help guys/girls.
Setting up a account take's like 1 min. Trying to convince the Dell guys to at least take at look at it and if possible to offer it in the R4.
2920XM and bios support for the M17x R3.
