why should we pay 300 premium for QS for a mere 0.1ghz base frequency? does this mean ES is not reliable, can destroy my lappy?(slick, widezu, katalin, geo, bigtony, DR, and many more (I really do love these forums, we have a nice group here
), come on, I am waiting your answers
don't wanna waste money

Gratz,
ES - engineering sample, early stages of the chip, meant for testing purposes only.
QS - qualification sample, this is the closest to OEM version, with temperature sensors and it usually has less bugs.
Now I'm not saying go for one or the other, every chip is slightly different than the other. If it's for daily use, I'd say go for the QS.
BTW, 300 is not that much for an extreme CPU. Back in the days, the Core2 and first i7 core generations used to run for about 1k -
The ES if fine but can have a few problems with using extreme frequencies when going into the upper 4Ghz range. It does not draw as much power as the QS, which doesn't draw as much power as the OEM. You may be completely fine with it but in my mind, I just feel like theirs an air of inadequacy to using an ES. So if you are planning to go into the extremes like GeoCake and I, I suggest not cheaping out on one.
-
ES/QS shouldn't really be sold:
Maximum PC | Intel OEM Engineers Caught Selling Sample Chips on eBay
Intel OEM engineers face five years in gaol - Selling sample CPUs on the sly | TechEye
(I've just realised how obvious this is but good read/links nonetheless).
Like others have said, they are just beta versions. You may encounter errors, you may not. With the OEM you have a peace of mind knowing that it will perform with no issues.
For extreme overclocking and results go with an OEM, you will want no less. For a good daily boost to performance go QS. -

If the socket will change, i doubt prices will lower significantly.

My 2920XM QS totally rocks. Expect to pay more for a QS than an ES, for obvious reasons. As Brother GeoCake points out, these were never intended for resale. They are technically Intel property. These processors are not be sold in the NBR Marketplace. (Thanks for the links GC. I have to spread the rep around before I can give you more.)
-
My 920XM QS is working perfectly as well. If you had the choice graz'zt, I would pick a QS over an ES.
-
I am also thinking QS as of now, especially after the links of geo (thanks man, appreciate it, +rep), don't wanna buy dodgy stuff for sure
damn me for upgrading to 2760 while buying my lappy -
Hindsight is always 20/20. They're expensive, but I'm paying extra for the OEM Extreme CPU next go round. (I know there are a bunch of folks that will argue it's not worth it, but to me it definitely is.) You cannot run a non-XM CPU at 4.5 to 5.0GHz like you can an XM. Not only do the XM procs kick the tail off of anything else as far as performance is concerned, it's the foundation of any in-warranty replacement systems and helps the machine hold its resale value.
-
I perfer OEM over ES/QS. Although I've found nothing wrong with the ES chips I have. They cost a great deal less too. The advantage of paying though dell for an OEM is you get OEM stability and a warranty. Some ES/QS chips don't overclock as high, but if your not going for benchmarks, then ES is perfectly fine. Although as others have pointed out, they are technically not for sale as they are Intel property.
I've put up huge benchmarks in my R2 with me ES chips. I had an OEM 920XM, but I think I burnt it out -

gratz, if you are referring to the 2.4ghz so called 2920 es, it works as advertised. Its actually an unlocked 2820. Its a hybrid.
It won't clock as high as a 2.5ghz 2920...but it might be a good choice for those looking for a little more, but not extreme overclocking. I'm guessing the 2.4ghz ES will max out in the high 3's ghz range...maybe 4 -
I got myself 2 2920XM ES. One when i was using MSI and since I could not overclock it I sold it. Recently I got one from Shirley on eBay and the system couldnt get into windows so I had to return. Rocking an OEM now
-
My 2920XM QS is working beautifully, but I don't get any warranty or support relating to the proc. If I ever need to do a system exchange or depot repair *shudder* I have to swap in the original 2760QM CPU first. Kind of a pain in the back side.

Just came across this today:
2920XM $199 - eBay
For a QS... Am I missing something here? Are they really the same seller as laptopmonkey? -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
Gawd, i wish you didn't show me that -
Hmm I dunno, make sure that when you buy, use Paypal in case something goes wrong and you can claim your money back.
-
The Revelator Notebook Prophet
Incredible price. Makes you think something has to be wrong, but for $199, WTH, I'd take the risk if I didn't already have one.
-
Seems fishy to me, the username is different and they have no feedback relating to any sold CPUs
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
Easiest way to check is to email the other laptopmonkey username and ask if this is legit. I think it is...and if you pay by paypal, you have nothing to worry about.
I'd get this in a heartbeat if I wasn't upgrading my laptop soon -
.
I no longer feel compelled to do benchmarking anymore, at least not until i got my hands on the new 79xx cards
I dare say the seller mistyped the price. Go ahead and take advantage of it ASAP! -
We are defo waiting a while for 7970M & 675/680M.. even Ivy bridge will take a few extra months to get to us
Anyone contact the real laptopmonkey yet? Go go go! -
I think I'm going for it. Worst that can happen is it's wrong or they don't send it, then I get Paypal to reimburse me. Hope it's what they say it is!
-
OH MAN!!! crazy!! I think I am going for it too
-
You guys paid yet?
-
As far as OCing concerns, the difference between the 2920xm and 2960xm is negligible right? Kind of like the situation with the 920xm and 940xm? Don't want to read through the entire 2920/2960 OCing thread hahah -
I just bought mine, and the payment does in fact go to the laptopmonkey PayPal account. It is really them!
There are 3 left, this is the best 29xxXM deal I've seen ever! -
Awesome. Hope all goes well - I can see 2 purchases already made for it. Can't wait to see you guys pushing these XMs oh yeahh!
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
You don't know how hard this is for me to resist this....I've been fighting the urge to buy this all day and it seems I'm losing the battle -
There's only 2 available hahaha selling like hot cakes
It is definitely laptopmonkey: laptop monkey -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
This is killing me...i just got to the last page of the paypal screen...about to click buy and I stopped myself
Someone please buy the last two so i don't buy this. I'm lacking self control -
1 available....!!!!!!!!!!!!
*drum roll* -
Haha I just grabbed one, really couldn't resist the temptation any more! Glad you guys liked the deal, 1 left go go! And thanks for the confirmation, Geo. I guess this account is normally used to selling network cards...
I guess we're all just sitting here refreshing that page -
Btw fingers crossed this deal is legit. Hopefully you guys don't get 920XMs instead, because of some stupid new employee... -
Hmm... it looks legit, but I'm not so sure. As the old saying goes, "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is." I am suspicious there is a mistake.
-
I think it is a typo On the price but who knows.
-
Well that's it folks, shows over. Slick did you get the last one?
Now the waiting game begins! -
I bought the last one. Who the heck can pass up a QS for two hundred bucks!
I hope it's the real deal.

, i really want to hear that these chips rock for you guys).

Haha, I'm having a deja vu with you guys. Same thing happened to a few of us with the famous QX9300 chips three year ago.
A seller out of nowhere with five OEM chips at less than 30% of the price everywhere. It turned out to be legit too. -
the one day i DONT search ebay for 2920xm..... and i miss the best deal on 2920xm. Go figure
-
Something has to give if the very same vendor is simultaneously selling the supposedly very same 2920XM QS processors for more than 3 times the amount. Five people are very, VERY lucky and I'm beginning freak out in envy.
