People, I just installed 2920xm (Thanks to SlickDude and GeoCake :)), I am running prime95 (at blend) to see if I did a good paste job (my first time ever :() at first it was around 76C but now I have a minor bump to 80C (in 2 days), because I will OC it to 4GHz using Widezu's guidelines, can someone confirm that I have good temps or awful ones?

They are decent enough. prime95 is the ultimate CPU test. It is like Furmark for the CPU. 80C is pretty good. I hit around 95C on 4.5Ghz.

2920xm....go with the 2960xm...or you could wait for the new 3900xm series. It's suppose to be 2.9-3.9 quad core

2960xm does not offer enough difference to justify its higher price tag. 39xx chips are not compatible (yet) or at all.

Well I got mine for $770 and that's pretty good compared to its retail price. I like it. Just need to learn how to overlock.

Guys so I have a problem here, after a paste everything is fine temps are <80C in Prime95 for about a few days. Then things start to heat up to the point that CPU temps spike up in the first 10 seconds of Prime95 to +90C and then throttles down to 700MHz for safety.. happened 3 times already so it is on occasion, we have the thoughts of our fellow forum members as follows:

SlickDude: it is a problem of heatsink
GeoCake: it is a problem of CPU drawing too much power and laptop not handling well enough

what are you guys thinking, I know I am already talking with these two masters of our fellow community but I am still concerned as 85C in BF3 is unacceptable from CPU :( also I want to run benches that's why I got 2920xm in the first place! I am considering on ordering a replacement heatsink, but I am not sure if it will help :( really appreciate everybody's help!

BTW I am using Prolimatech PK-1

EDIT: Also one thing, which concerns me A LOT is that I am using optimus and my GPU is not working in windows, but because of CPU, my GPU idle temps are 55C  (EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT USED) this is indeed crazy :(

its a tad too high...especially if you repasted.

will dell send you one under warranty? i think a new heatsink is a good idea

You could try a laptop cooler like the one I have in my sig. It lowered my temps a good 5-10 degrees for the CPU and around 3-5 for my gpu and even alittle more when OCing. Artic mx-4 repaste helped too. Try cleaning out ur vents. Take the cover off and take out the 2 fans and clean the vents out. You will be surprised how much crap gets in there. Also depends on where it is and how many people are around it. Just FYI...80% of all dust is dead human skin.

yeah I am cleaning it 24/7 nowadays, I think something wrong down there, I will replace the heatsink but I am skeptical for improvement as the cycle is clear, repaste is done well, temps are down for a few days, then they go up.. if it was the heatsink, why it is down for a few days??

i looked, and i couldn't see a place where CPU fan was monitored, but i assume you know how to go and click on the sensor tab and then the fan icon on the bottom left to set your fans

I know it but should I change it Slick? I thought I shouldn't mess with the fan profile?

i wouldn't change it unless you were having heat issues and had to bump up the fan. The problem is, when you use HWINFO to control the fans, it controls both fans...so your GPu fan is also affected. This could mean louder than normal GPU fan under normal situations

Fan speeds are listed under COMPAL EC or DELL EC depending on which you have enabled.

Well I've done a fresh re-paste and a total re-clean, etc. At 4.4Ghz all cores, I easily did the 1024 throttlestop test and my max temp was 96C on one core and 95/94C on the others. In 2 weeks, I will not be able to do this (will get 100C and thermal shutdowns) and I have no idea why...

It's just the nature of the fresh paste out of the tube. Despite speak of its longevity, paste does go off ever so slightly as it gets heated and cooled over and over especially for extreme users. Remember in desktop situations the highest temps these pastes will see is only around 80C. PK-1, IC Diamond, etc happens to the best of them. The difference isn't significant but I'd does mean the difference between 99C and 100C :)
