So I just ordered my 2nd r3. I've been wondering for a while about why my first r3 was over $3k and what the difference was between a not So optioned one would be performance wise. So now I have an r2 and 2 r3s coming to me but I have a strong feeling the r2 won't even get unboxed and get mailed back.

The 2 specs I ordered are...

    Black. Nebuglya red
    2820qm. 2720qm.
    4GB ram. 4GB ram.
    256GB SSD. 320GB X2 7200rpm
    120hz 3D kit. 60hz LCD
    Gtx460. Gtx460
    Bluray. DVD-r etc
    Intel 6300. Intel 6300
2 yr advanced. 2 yr advanced

Noone really cares about the price because nobody knows what the markup is and everyone lies about how much of a deal they got to make themselves feel better. Safe to say the price difference was well over 1200 between the 2 and I wanted to see the performance differences for a casual user like me.

I will do simple fps comparisons in wow, cod4, cs source etc and done benchmarks to compare as well as turn on/off comparo and a photo shoot. All tests will be done side by side.

Me too :). I've never really done reviews on tech stuff but I'm looking forward to making some videos and doing an actual 'casual' perspective review.

I didn't get the 2630 even though that would have saved $200 because it doesn't support 1600 memory. I'm not even sure if perhaps the limitation might be only on the CPU or the chipset etc but the 27 and 28 both do. I do plan to go 8gb so 1600 would be cool.

I didn't get the bluray on the 2nd because I never use bluray. I dud get it on the first because if I like 3d I will rent 3d bluray movies etc and for resale having all the options always helps.

I didn't get the 6870 because of optimus. If it doesnt work I figured I could do a rundown to see what difference it made. I always preferred nvidia for the driver support anyways and their name just sounds cooler lol.

Interesting comparison. I have a feeling that the SSD will provide most of the performance difference between the two machines.

I think SSD does not increase the FPS rate in game

An SSD won't change the FPS in a game at all, SSD's just speed up boot/load times which doesn't affect the way a game plays just how fast it loads up. I don't think there will be much of a difference at all between the two other than in 3D games.

I agree I don't think the ssd will improve fps Just load times. I've had raptors in my desktop since they came out. My first MacBook pro I got an ssd and loved it. I've never really tried raid-0 in anything. I could turn on and shut down my Mac pro 3x before a friends m1730 even booted the first time. Because of that hdds scare me although Mac to pc isn't really fair since os' are different.

Since you're getting an R2 in the mail anyway. I'd suggest keeping that if it's configured decently. It will perform better than the R3 in games - minus the 3D, but for the most part people feel that's a gimmick.

Yeah I probably will but I'm fairly decided it's the least likely to stay with me. I don't think the wife will be happy to see $10k on the cc in less than a week. Cost wise the r2 $1k higher than the 2820 so I have builds for 2,3 and 4k. In the end if apple decides to upgrade their MacBook pro line soon all 3 are at risk of going back. But that would require sandybridge and a decent 4xx series gpu which I dont think apple will do.

Can't wait to get all 3!

You should consider comparing the R2 to the R3. There are tons of people who want to know if it is worth purchasing an R2 or R3 right now. You could provide a lot of insight on that.

I was going to say, 10,000 on 3 Gaming Lap Tops!!! I hope you are a game developer or something. Even 6000 on two lap tops is nuts!!! Lap tops are like cars, as soon as they leave the factory their value drops.

Laptops, esp high end ones if they are taken care of nicely tend to retain their value pretty decently.

However, I need to ask. What was your reasoning behind buying 3 alienware's all at the same time?

Precisely. Test driving cars however never cost me anything. I'm going to compare the r3s mainly as I'll most likely be keeping one of them but I'll run all the same games etc on the r2 for comparison purposes. For an extra $1k to get a 940xm its a tough sell vs sandybridge. However if anyone upgrades to it aftermarket I'd say it's not a bad idea.

I'm more curious as to what the frames will be like in games like wow. People say that wow runs better in widowed mode which uses 1 card only. I could never own a machine with dual cards knowing the game I play is smoother with 1 turned off. What a waste!

I'm also interested in 3d now. Read lots of reviews and spoke to a few people who have tried it and they all say it's cool stuff.

You're aware of the 15% restocking fee you'll have to pay on the returned machines right? I mean you could try to convince them its defective but theres no way they'd believe you since its pretty obvious you ordered 3 machines at once.

I wonder if the sales rep's commission gets taken away once a laptop is returned. Well if that's the case, ur rep will not be a happy camper when he sees 2 laptop returns :)

This is but one of the reasons why companies have such strict return policies - thread closed.

Start a topic when you actually have the notebooks but don't start one now just to show off a new purchase.
