I have seen a few videos where people "hack" together eyefinity on 3 monitors on M17x's using the display port as primary video, the HDMI and VGA, etc as secondary and third.

I have 6 Dell 2408 WFP's that are connected to 2 6990's on my desktop.

Those monitors have Display Port, DVI x 2, VGA, composite, and a bunch of other ports on them.

I would like all 6 connected to my M17x with the ATI (AMD) video card. I know because manufacturers don't enable eyefinity when building these things out ( Kinda dumb, because 6 x mini display ports will fit nicely on the side of the laptop) it won't happen.

However, I should be able to connect at least 3 of these monitors to the M17x. Can I get a display port "spliter" so I can drive 2 or 3 seperate Display Port monitors off the single Display Port on the M17X R4?

Definitely. You can use the splitter to clone one of the displays into two. I THINK the maximum allowed for the R4 is three externals and the notebook LCD in tandem, but don't quote me on it. It may only allow three simultaneous displays. I know Eyefinity is doable on our Alienwares. I've done it with my R2 using the LCD and my HDTV. Three would probably be the max you want to set Eyefinity to though. You want to make sure the splitter uses it's own power source and amplifies the HDMI/DP signal, otherwise you could risk overloading the GPU.

I just read something about hooking up a spliter to the display port connector to split it and do the clone, but you can either 1. clone or 2, clone and extend, so windows will think it is 1 big monitor, but you are getting the pixel count of both monitors as if it were one giant monitor.

so that gives me 2 external displays. Then if I do a third on HDMI and a 4th on VGA, that gives me 4 monitors + the laptop screen, all of which will be running at 1900x 1200.

Would there be any thing else I would need?

Don't think you do...that sounds about right. One things, be very wary of using a 1920x1200 monitor on your VGA port. It doesn't like transmitting those HS signals very well. You may get choppy refresh rates or inter-frame artifacts on that VGA monitor.

I have 2 monitors connect to my R4. Cannot connect more then that since analog and digital output don't work well together with that card. Run 2 monitors 1 from mini dp and 1 from hdmi. Analog can only be used alone. If you want more then that you need the adapter SVOShark provided.
