Hey,
So I got my M17x earlier yesterday and I did a clean install.
But after that I can't seem to get the drivers for the gpu to work.
There's a yellow ! sign in device manger and it says device has been stopped by windows.
I tried both drivers from this page: slickdude80 OC thread
And my second question is how do I overclock the CPU to 4ghz in the bios?
![]()
Oh right, in WEI score the GPU gets a 5.5, though it should be running on the 7970m
Since I did use Fn+F7

Arai, enable extreme edition
Then set your multipliers to 40, 39, 38, 38
Did you get your drivers installed for the 7970? -
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
40, 39, 38, 38 is awesome for a non XM processor. (i.e., 4ghz single core, 3.9ghz 2cores, and 3.8ghz for 3-4 cores) -
My system comes in tomorrow.
Just want to clarify, this should work with the 3610QM? Should I be able to tell much of a difference? -

I haven't had anything close to an AW system.. I'm sure I will be amazed just from what I have!
3610QM, 7970m, 1T (2x500GB raid 0) -

you'll love it! If you want, you can still overclock the 7970m. You can use my guide. There are huge gains to be had with an overclock
-
Thanks again -

I have the Dell one installed atm, but its still giving 5.5 WEI score.
It's definitely not the IGP that's running.
The others I got 6.6 WEI and the 12.5 BETA doesn't seem to work at all.
Maybe im overlooking something, not sure.
Had issues with the internet, modem was acting up hence the slow reply.
Not sure if this is correct:
Gonna have to stress it to see what the temps are under full load. -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
looks good! You've overclocked nicely.
Run a 3dmark11 and post the score -
Im still crippled someone with the gpu drivers.
Didn't you get any error while installing it?
I ran driver sweeper + amd cc before installing the new drivers, but nothing. -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
Go to the dell website, download the latest 7970m drivers.
-
That's the one I have atm, but even so the WEI score is only 5.5 that's a bit weird no?
8.934.2.0 released 7 3 2012 -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
that's because of enduro or some crap. Just run 3dmark11 and see what you get. Wei doesn't mean squat anyways. you'll get a higher wei score if you do FN + F7 and shut off enduro

AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3720QM Processor,Alienware M17xR4 score: P1442 3DMarks
For comparison sake: Same system, drivers and whats not.
7970m CCC 12.5 beta drivers
There's a small performance boost with the beta drivers compared to the stock drivers (first link in this post).
But something is killing my GPU performance, imma re-install everything and delete the 2 partitions (recovery/system).
That's the only thing I can think of that somehow screwed things up.
Though I formatted the 3rd partition and installed Windows there, so not sure if it will bare fruit. -
Fixed: Deleted the system partition and formatted the recovery one.
Then formatted the large partition and only usable one and installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on that.
Previously I had installed W7 Pro x64 and I think the recovery/system partition messed up the drivers.
7970m mod/ 12.5 beta catalyst also installed with success in one go.
And WEI score are as follow:
Processor 7,7
Memory 7,8
Graphics Aero 7,9
Gaming graphics 7,9
HDD 5,9
Using the HDD for now until my bank allows me then I'll redo it all on a SSD.
Now to run 3Dmark11 and see what I get, after that I'll toy with OC-ing the GPU -
-
-
Yeah, you'll be able to go 100Mhz higher, so 41/40/39/39, but still 7.7. You need an XM for 7.8
The whole semi-overclock by 400Mhz is a really cool feature from Intel, probably one of the best features since Sandy Bridge. -
hi i was wondering if someone could help me
i have a link to a site which directs to a database but just recently the database
is not working and when i click the link i recive this message
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers
error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Cannot open database '(unknown)'. It may not be a database that your application recognizes, or the file may be corrupt.
/includes/data-connection.asp, line 6
could someone tell me what it is and how to fix it -

Question is why the hell is my score 3x lower than someone else that benched a R4
Score 1
P1569 3DMarks <<< mine
Score 2
P5872 3DMarks <<< some dude
It's in the graphical department...I can't figure it out. -

HaloGod2012 Notebook Virtuoso
disable the hd4000 gpu, could be using that, i had the same issues
-
How?
I did Fn+F7, in display > adapter the 7970 is listed.
When I switch to the HD4000 my resolution is 800x600 so that's easily noticable.
Feel free to elaborate as I really don't know what else to do at this point. -
HaloGod2012 Notebook Virtuoso
go into the device manager, right click the hd4000 under display devices, and click disable. Reboot, might have to wipe out ati drivers and reinstall.
-
It's not there, only the 7970 is listed.
With the original drivers that came with the R4 I believe both were listed. -
HaloGod2012 Notebook Virtuoso
hmm, why not just use stock dell drivers for the 7970m? is 12.5 beta that big of a difference?
-
See page 3 I posted stock vs 12.5.
When I try to install Dell IGP drivers it says this computer is not strong enough now and aborts the installation.
Damn first Dell comp and already I'm getting a bad experience.
Then again it's AMD/Intel issue mainly. -
HaloGod2012 Notebook Virtuoso
plus ur using modified drivers not from dell. I used dell drivers and just disabled my hd4000 in device manager, not one issue ever since. But would be nice to have 12.5 and no issues. when you hit f7 to switch gpu's, and it uses the hd4000, it wont install the igp driver?
I would uninstall all drivers, and then boot up and check the device manager again. Both should be there with a ! mark next to them, then disable the hd4000, and then reboot, and install 12.5 -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
Arai, reinstall the dell drivers and disable integrated as halo suggested. The 12.5 beta i'm using work because i've completely disabled integrated graphics in the bios. The R4 doesn't have an unlocked bios yet that i know of, so stick with the dell drivers for now. Your 3dmark11 score appears to be running off HD4000 graphics
-
I disabled it, rebooted...all was well.
After I installed the 7970m drivers (both from Dell), only the 7970m shows up in device manager.
Isn't the HD4000 supposed to be there as well...but disabled?
When I boot with the IGP I see it disabled and a ! next to the 7970m
When I'm running on the 7970m only that is listed, so hopefully it all works well now.
Meh so much trouble might have well left it all at stock drivers.
Gonna run 3Dmark again and see how it goes. -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
I think it is time to do an alienware respawn to get your computer back to the way it arrived in the box.
Then do an FN+F7 to disable integrated.
Then, just leave it alone lol -
That won't work either since I deleted the reserved partitions.
Those were needed to I think to restore the comp. -
I left mine stock for exactly that reason. So you cant reinstall the system back to its original state? Thats messed up.
-
I got it to work finally!
P5891, ill write up a small guide soon gonna try beta drivers first.
P5950 with beta 12.5 drivers (not overclocked). -
-
Pretty much everything has been said already but for some that's not tech savvy the proper order of installation matters:
So anyway in case you format your HDD (and deleted the partitions, recovery/system) and everything is F.U.B.A.R.
Follow the process listed below in that order:
Re-install Windows
Ethernet drivers (you can surf the net / some installations need it)
Alienware OSD drivers (lets you switch between GPU's...also on the Resource CD > Applications)
Reboot the PC
After the reboot Press Fn+F7 key for another reboot
Then have a look at Device Manager, there should be 2 cards listed under display.
Install the HD 4000 drivers (resource CD/Dell website....don't check the box for WinStat ...bla bla Aero)
Reboot the comp again (now it should be properly listed in DM)
Disable the HD 4000 card in Device Manager by right clicking on it and reboot
If all is well the HD4000 should be disabled and the other card should be ''Stanard VGA adapter".
Install the Radeon drivers (resource CD/Dell/ Beta 12.5+ drivers...custom installation)
Once that's done it will ask to reboot, do that.
After restarting the comp have a look at Device Manager you'll see a yellow ! next to the Radeon adapter (this is fine, don't worry about it).
Press Fn+F7 for another reboot, that should switch you to the discrete graphics card (Radeon in this case).
Then open up Catalyst Center and go to PowerPlay, and set it to High Performance.
Now you should be running on the beast of a card and the IGP should be taking a nice sleep for a while. -
-
Netherlands, I use a lot of different Japanese handles
-
-
Used to work there, I live nearby though like 20-30 minutes by train.
-
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
Fabulous! Glad you got it all to work...now you'll have to do it all again lol
AMD Catalyst 12.6 BETA – 7900 MOD – BenchmarK3D -
Haha, well it should be easy now
But my games performances aren't so great.
Diablo 3 everything maxed, 15 FPS approx.
Counter Strike Source everything maxed 60-75 (this should be well over 100).
In Catalyst Center I left everything at default, but is there anything else I can do to boost FPS? -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
diablo 3 should be getting you 100+fps with everythign maxxed and AA on
i think you're running on integrated...what happens when you FN+F7 and you pick dedicated? -
Yeah somehow the damn IGP took over again.
Though it's disabled in DM, gonna try those drivers you linked.
3720QM OC, 7970M drivers plague
