    Hi all,

    I have an m17x R4 with a GTX680m and 16GB Ram

Ive just dropped a 3940xm in it and Im looking to overclock but I have no experience with CPU clocking.

Ive heard that it will sensibly run at 4.2ghz. How can i tweak to achieve this?

Im not sure weather its beast to use Bios or Intel xtu??

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated

    thanks in advance

    Russ

You should be able to overclock it through the BIOS. The 3940XM was not designed to be in the M17x R4, so it may run hotter than usual, or may not overclock well, but should be possible. Let us know how it goes. I don't have any experience with this, specifically. ;)

You can use both methods to overclock. A lot of members use Intel XTU to overclock.

Awesome, thanks guys! I have a laptop cooler so hopefully this should help me not set fire to my house! :)

Ok I've done most of it, the only thing that didn't work was the turbo time limit is still stuck on 28. It seems to be OK but in CPU-Z its at 4.0ghz but fluctuates down to 1.5, then 2.5, then back to 4.0. Is this supposed to happen?

That is power related fluctuations. Also change power plan to high performance as well as download throttle stop. There is a guide how to set up throttlestop if you type in throttlestop guide in google.

So when I get it correct will it just sit at 4.0ghz without dropping? I dont seem to have a power plan?? Where would I find that, in the BIOS? thanks

Flash stock A11 BIOS Driver Details | Dell US then follow this (method 2) [M17x R4] - 'unlocked' BIOS versions
Unlocked A11 BIOS Power ->Advanced CPU Control ->Turbo PWR Limit MSR Lock ->Disabled
Overclocking options -> Override Turbo settings -> Extreme -> Level 3 overclocking
    Download Intel XTU https://downloadcenter.intel.com/De...4&keyword=""extreme+tuning+utility""&lang=eng
    XTU -> Core -> multipliers 40x.
-> Turbo Boost Power Time Window 56 seconds.

Awesome, many thanks, I think my BIOS already has these settings but I didn't touch them as I followed the previous guide. It definitely has the option of 3 overclocked states. Throttle stop is a tad confusing though, do I just basically set it up the same as my BIOS/Xtu and then hit the "on" button??

Russ, let us know how your temps are when running all 4 cores at 4.0ghz. I would suggest you do a 5min CPU stress test using XTU.

HI yeah I will definitely. I have a laptop cooler which I will use though as I don't want to mess anything up. My previous questions though.. 1) If its clocked properly will it stay at 4.0 and not fluctuate?...2) What the hell do I do with throttle-stop? :)

You always will have your limits, you already have 10watt more output, check in XTU how your TDP wattage scales well with the performance and mostly that will be your limit mostly. (keeping temps out of this).
Also check this slider: core current limit as this will also reduce your clocks, increase it a little bit or alot if needed.

Mostly you clocks get reduced if it gets to hot (90 degrees I think) or it goes from 65watt to its design TDP of 55watt.

You can all monitor this with XTU or certain tools, I like to use openhardwaretool.

Cool, I can't find any tdp wattage scales on xtu, temps were between 80 and 100, but I'm still not sure if I'm doing it correctly because could someone please answer weather the ghz should stay at 4 or weather they should jump around? As mine are all over the place

Ok, I have an issue, it runs fine at 3.9 but then it drops for a split second to around 1.0 even 0.9 then jumps back up. This as you can imagine has a HUGE effect on the game im playing. Any Ideas? Again.... should it fluctuate or should it stay pretty solid?

Under where you can monitor your temps, you can edit that and add the TDP, just click it.

When your CPU gets a 100 degrees it will throttle down, maybe you should disable the extended turbo and maintain only 55 watts?
The heatsink is just 2 pipe and 65watts could be to much pushing it.

And maybe you should do a repaste of your cpu, it sounds to me like you can win some degrees, but i am not sure becuase it's a XM cpu, but 100 sounds as way to high to me.

Yep thats what it is! After many hours of tinkering its throttling down at 100 degrees even though its only there for a split second. So I need to find the best way to cool my system. Can you sent private messages on here? as widezu69 has the same setup as me and he has 4.3ghz, so Id like to ask his advise on cooling

    Use IC Diamond thermal paste.

Unfortunately, I don't think the 3940XM is going to work in the M17x.

Sorted! Yep I've ordered some paste and a cooler master u3 but I had the multpliers all on 4.3 Lol! Once I knocked them back to 4.3,4.1,3.8,3.8 it was absolutely fine and running around 4.0 the whole time.
Ill tell you what though, it was only throttling due to heat every now and then. I'm really exited to re paste and use the cooling fan to see if I can sqeeze the full 4.3 all the time out of it!! :)
But whatever happens its a completely different lap top now, the difference in settings i can use in say Arma 3, or Black flag is amazing. With the 3610qm I could go pretty high but everything lagged, now I can max everything and keep solid smooth game-play even with a load of stuff going on on the screen!! Good times!! :)
