I'm looking to buy an Alienware M17x soon and I can't decide whether to get the 3D NVidia card or the AMD card. From what I've read the AMD 6970M performs much better than the NVidia card. However, I'm not sure if the better performance outdoes the 3D capability of NVidia. I think that 3D games would be pretty cool with Crysis 2 and other games that I'm sure will be coming out in the future. But is it worth the fallback in performance? I'm wondering if, since they are both high end graphics cards, if I will even notice much of a difference at all. Personally, I probably won't be doing too much hardcore gaming besides something like Crysis. But mostly I'll be doing schoolwork, some Photoshop and Premeire, HD video editing and watching, surfing, and some Garry's Mod lol. So, what do yall think? Thanks!

hd 6970 is like 2x gtx460m. Crysis 2 in 3D with gtx460m is not so good because in 3D you will have like 20fps:/

Oh really? :-/ hmm. Do you know if there are any like apps or things that come with the alienware 3D pack that just kind of showcase the 3D capability?

Turn down the resolution when you game in 3D. Essentially however, it's up to you to decide whether or not 3D is worth it. If you have the funds to purchase an external 3D screen, then I would advise you to get the 6970.

Once the 485m is released for the R3, it will raise the 3D version to equal or above the 6970.

Obviously there is a cost to this, however the 120hz screen and 3D effect in games is pretty cool.

Yet there is still no real evidence that the 485m is coming to the R3!

I wouldnt bet on it, already the 485m works on the R3, but without the 3d, just read some of the threads on this forum.

Even without the 3d, the 485m in the R3 is the equal of the 6970, with the 3D, it offers a heck of a lot more that the 6970.

Nvidia tout the 485m as a 3D capable card, so in my view, its only a matter of time before its supported on the R3.

When do you think the 3D 485m card will be available on the m17x?

Another question: if I currently have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD5470, about how much better are these two video cards that I could get with an alienware?
