Ok so I didn't opt for the 3D option or the 120hz screen and just went for the standard R3 with a GTX 580... Now I was curious. My friend has a Sony Bravia 3D tv so I wondered if it was possible to do some 3D gaming over HDMI.
Well after an hour of trying to figure it out.. I finally got 3D enabled on the R3, ran the test in the Nvidia control panel and voila! 3D was offiically working. So now to see how great this 3D really was. First thing I did was launch Crysis 2 (v1.9 with dx11 and texture packs) and noticed 3D suddenly became disabled![]()
Figured out after 20 min that all resolutions must be at 1280x720 on desktop and in games for the 3D to stay enabled. Strange.. but then again it's my first time trying this so I had no idea.
Set resolution on Crysis 2 to 1280x720.. Turned on 3D within the game options and.... nothing! What I mean was it didn't make the image on the screen look double imaged which I expect it look like in 3D. Well we put our glasses on then fiddled with the tv's 3D options and found you can adjust the depth of 3D from 0 to +2 or -2. Well when we adjusted that we started to see some kind of 3D happening. But the 3D was mediocre at best. I know this game rates high on the compatibility list so I expected to be blown away. I tried to watch some 3D videos online and again very poor 3D effects. It's definitely enabled on the R3 and the TV but I'm wondering if it's really just 10x better 3D with the official Nvidia 3D vision kit? Or maybe my friends Sony 3D tv is just a piece of junk?
We didn't test any 3D blurays on it so no idea how it performs on those.

Are you using an HDMI 1.4 cable? Capable of 3D. I have a Sony Bravia 46HX800, but never bothered with 3D as it doesn't look right to me, and seems gimicky. I think Bravias needed a 3D reciever, though I'm sure you have that if needed. Mine didn't come with it. Didn't bother me.

I don't know if there's an additional step to enable 3D in the game besides the in game menus.. Either way it was very disappointing. -
Well, in my opinion, I agree with your assessment. 3D Sucks, It just doesnt' look right. Why I never bothered with it. Never even seen a 3D movie in the theater. Not my thing

I will say movies like Avatar on an IMAX screen in 3D will blow your mind so you're definitley missing out there.. But for the home experience I'd say 3D has a lot of catching up to do. Active shutter glasses just seem to give people more headaches than anything and looking at a 52" screen 10-15 feet away is no comparison to watching a movie on IMAX where the screen takes up your entire line of sight.
But I've seen some 3D game demos in the Sony store and they weren't bad.. However I don't know how that compares to 3D gaming on these laptops. I'm curious if anyone else has tried the 3D via HDMI out to their 3D tv.. -
I'm amazed no one in here hasn't tried doing this already!

Read about 1.3b and 1.4 etc....High bandwidth cables of 1.3 can easily support 3D. I just read about it by chance earlier today

I watched narnia this year on 3D. Nothing exciting at all. But yogi preview b4 movie started was decent. So it all depends on the " Cameron" out there. -

Avatar was the only decent 3D movie. The rest only show anything 3D when stuff related to weapons and explosives pop out. Mostly gimmicks.

All the IMAX movies look fantastic in 3D.

And is this true that you have to lower your resolution to 720p?? OMG what a bunch of crap that is. Yuck...probably the one thing that really turns me off about the latest Nvidia cards is the 3d push. First PhysX (I seriously think that was blown WAY out of proportion) and now 3d! Gee thanks...please take my money Nvidia!! I dont need it!!
Ok, end rant. -
You have to lower the res to 720P/60 or 1080P/24 because nVidia sticks to the standard for frame packing which 3D blu-ray uses. They are planning on adding in side by side support.

I tried Crysis, Resident Evil 5 and Fifa '11 and no noticeable 3D effect even though the tv itself said "3D signal detected" so it was enabled on both tv and laptop.. Videos were not in 3D either. I could only get a minimal effect by adjusting the 3D depth through the tv settings. If I left it at default there was no double imaging on screen so it's like nothing was happening.

Yeah you are right that means it was on 3D right. I guess the sure way to confirm is it will have those double images or ghosting if its indeed running on 3D.
3D gaming w/Sony Bravia 3Dtv sucks! Am I wrong?
