New to the forum and after checking GAQs and so on I couldn't see anything related.

I was curious as to how people have found the 3d display, ideally with the 580M gpu?

I'm considering getting the m17x with the 120hz screen on the basis that it's simply a better screen but very curious about what people's experiences are with it.

    Thanks

Sorry "GAQ" is "FAQ" when I type English ><

Also the specs for what I wanted in case it has bearing on the 3d performance. (By which I mean the actual 3d glasses style 3d, not the graphics!)

    2630QM
    580 GTX
    4GB RAM
    320GB HDD

edit: Ok, re-reading FAQs (not GAQs) I did find a reference to the 3d aspect, however, to be clear I was more concerned as to how the 3d was handled with each option of GPU. For instance, does it *need* the 580M or would the 460M suffice?

I wouldn't recommend getting the 460M, it's definitely NOT powerful enough to run the newer games in 3D at high settings. You could get away with 720P 3D gaming with some settings turned off, but if you're paying this much for your laptop, surely sub-par performance isn't good enough? The 580m can run new games such as Crysis 2 in 2D at 30FPS at 1080p max settings. You could get away with smooth 1080P 3D gaming with a couple of settings turned off with the 580m.

As someone who's new to the forum, I will give you some advice...which honestly you should just use some common sense and not need, but whatever.

Instead of making tons of posts, you CAN make one post and ask all of your questions in it. Thanks.

Sorry but my first motivation for even joining the forum was to PM another member about discounts on Alienware product. The 10 post rule to enable PMs seems to encourage multiple posts, it's certainly clear on many, many other people's posts they are doing it just to hit that number. I at least restricted it to valid questions, not in the FAQ.

That and every other post I see on the first couple of pages are about discrete topics, it didn't feel wrong or lacking in common sense to basically emulate what everyone else is doing.

    Thanks for the welcome.

i have a laptop with 580m, not 3d. but the card is amazing, it does handle crysis 2 all ultra with high res pack and dx11 and there hasnt been any major drops in performance. it might be expensive but if gaming and 3d gaming is important then why not. it would be smarter to get the 580 for perforance boost in 3d as it is demanding on the gpu. and why pay that much for a subperforming laptop, understood if money is an issue.

Just FYI the R3 isn't available yet with the 120hz 3d screen, although you can choose it in the configurator alonsgide the 580M, but a member of this forum called Dell and they told him that they haven't managed to make 3d work with this card yet, apparently this matter will take more time.

Sometimes you just dont think of everything all at once. And to be honest, any question posted as a new thread gets more attention. Atleast thats they way i saw it when i needed info with a fresh install and installing an SSD etc.

yes, but the best thing to do is come up with a long list of questions and then post. ive seen threads where there are lists of questions and all of them get answered. just take some time and come up with as many questions as possible.

Interesting, I've ordered an r3 about 2 hours ago with 580M GTX and the 3d screen and the rep didn't say anything about it not working/not being compatible?

    How old is your info?

Well, the reps aren't always the brightest. That would be awesome if they work together now though...

And yeah, the 10 posts rule. Fair enough, sorry for the snark. Glad you found something you like.

About 10 hours old, I think you should call and check, you definitely don't wanna end up getting a 580M without 3d, that's not what you paid for.

Just called them and the guy took a while to check, but came back and was adamant the two have been certified to be compatible and working together.

I hope it's true, that's what everybody are waiting for, but till now on the website you can't start with the 3d configuration and choose the 580M, you're stuck with the 460M, hopefully your rep is right.

weird - I believe you totally that there was probably an issue but I've tried choosing all gpu's and the 3d screen in fresh browser sessions each time, in different combos (screen > gpu, gpu > screen, changing gpu/screen) and it liked it each time.

still if it doesn't work that's where the 14 day distance selling legislation comes in ;)

aha I figured it out. I'm in the UK, and I think we're ahead of the ROW for the 580M...

I had similar success to using the browser as you did. I could not get past the EPP rep due to an error still showing up on their side. We checked with sales support and tech support who agreed that it would not pass inspection. She therefore would not finalize the order. I checked with a different EPP rep and got the same result. I tried to order it working my best deal over the phone with a standard alienware rep and again got the same result. I really wanted to make the order, but have not been successful. I will try to talk to you off line so that maybe we can figure out why you can order it and I can't.

    ==========

Ahhh,, UK sorta makes sense. I had also pointed out that someone from the UK had done a review on that configuration, but it did not help my cause.

I don't think that's the case, because previously trying to configure the 580M with the 120Hz screen was impossible.

Well then put your location in your profile
Yeah in the UK apparently you're ahead of the US, let's just hope there won't be any bad surprises down the road.
    Good luck ;)

The 3d bundle comes with the monitor........ "17.3-inch WideFHD 1920x1080 120Hz WLED w/ NVIDIA 3D Vision Bundle"

So the 580m and 120 hz screen should come with the glasses and all.

After a bit I am going to order this and see how it goes. It has been up for around 2 days now so, I doubt it is an error.
