    Open CCC
    Change to advance
Graphics drop down box in upper left corner
    Select 3D

    I have mine set to:

    Standard-balanced
    AA use application settings
    AA mode performance
    AF use application settings
Catalyst AI (box unchecked and set slider to standard)
    Bitmap quality

I think OP is saying they want to use different setting for each program.

i have also noticed that the 5870's flicker in crossfire. But that the flickering goes away when v-sync is enabled (but this isn't the best option in some games). It's not full on screen shaking, just slight lighting flicker constantly... any insights?

Have not seen this on my system but have read back in Feb that there was an issue with LCD flickering that was going to be fixed with a bios update. This issue is specific only to the R2. Since there have been bios updates I thought the issue was fixed. They suggested as a workaround, disabling Turbo Mode in the BIOS should lessen the symptom.

The problem could also be that CF is not supported in that particular game and you could try turning it off. With CF the two GPU's do not draw at the same time and this lag can often be seen at low frame rates below say 22 frames.

Also check your settings in Catalyst control and try reducing some of the performance settings. Also if you are using a heavy antivirus try switching to a different antivirus, something like Microsoft Security Essentials.

what particular game are you playing? I agree with you that in theory v-snyc should be off.

My desktop has a G19 keyboard which has a performance monitor which measures ram usuage. Most FPS games I play use 6-8 gig of ram, NONE use my full 12 gig. I am just wondering if 8 gig of good quality ram may help? I have 8 gig on my laptop and have noticed no flickering with 5870 CF (yet)

Also make sure your hardrive is defragmented. A good alternative to the windows defragmenter is called Diskeeper.

Nice keyboard. But I like mine wireless. If I had a desktop I would pick that keyboard.

well i don't think defragmenting is an issue because it's a clean install... i notice the flickering on dragon age, crysis (all of them), bfbc2... like i said it's not massive, in your face flickering - it's just a very light darkening like the backlight is doing it but i know it's crossfire related.

Also it's not fps related because even when the fps are lower than the refresh rate of the monitor the flickering still exists which leads me to believe it might be a driver issue rather than a hardware issue.

Problem is there arent any other drivers for me to try because none of them work atm...

EDIT: Also it's not micro stuttering as while it does flicker at 20-30fps it also flickers at over 70 so its separate

You can use ATi Tray Tools to configure your 3D settings for each application independently.

Unfortunately, it isn't able to force FSAA compatibility modes or Crossfire compatibility modes (you can use ATi Crossfire Xtension for the latter).
