is it normal for the laptop (m17x r3 with 120hz 3d panel running a 460m gtx) to downclock to around 200 mhz core clock 400 shader clock when you UNPLUG it?

however it goes back up when you PLUG it back in.

if it is normal, is there a way to disable that and keep it at maximum performance?

Yes, its normal. When the laptop's plugged in, it will be on full power. If you unplug it, it has to revert power to a limited source like the battery, which cannot run the computer on full blast for more than 1-1.5 hrs at most.

it's in the advanced power settings. Pick the setting you use(Power Saver, Balanced, High Performance) then go to Advanced Power settings. From there you can change the % of performance for the processor, gpu, igp and whatever you use.

    Hope it helps. Good luck.

Okay, just a few things to tell you before you protest.

Not everything that is "Newer" is the best. In this case, the A08 bios. the A05 and above all have throttling, whether is heat or power, which makes alot of people annoyed. I think it's dell's plan to keep gpu and cpu's alive longer, so people don't blow them up or oc them too much.

I would recommend you go use this bios. Follow the instructions on the directions, but only for the bios, you can ignore the gpu and driver directions. It's the A04 mod bios, which has options unlocked. Just follow the last section to installing the bios.

Oh, and on the optimus thing, you don't have it. As far as I know, the m17x's only have optimus on non-3D systems.

    Hi,
yes it's realllly normal that your system auto downclock when you're on battery mode to safe you're battery as at this performance at long terme, it can damage the battery.
You ''cant ''overclock your GPU on battery mode as it's a saved mode on the Vbios. As an exemple use the software nvidiaInspector, put ''oC showing'' and put it on Performance 0 (P12): you are allow to oC it just a little. But on AC mode, you can go where you want.
If you want to use the Normal profile on battery mode, Mod your VBios with Nibitor if you know how to do it or ask someone on mvktech.

can you provide me with a link so that i may be able to see where i can get started. that would be greatly apprecaited.
and can you please explain the purpose of unlocking the bios (like in your mod of the A04 bios). what is point of disabling IGP and enabling only the GTX card.

    thank you
