I spoke to a Dell connection I have regarding the official support / launch of the 485M and they informed me that the reason it has not been added to the line and been officially support was not because of thermals or technical problems but because of the marketing department stonewalling it.
He informed me that if we make a post on the Dell Ideastorm and it gets alot of hype and activity that is the best way for marketing consider it.
So we have made a post and we need anyone that is genuinely interested in the option of a 485M in the M17XR3 to vote on the Dell Ideastorm and post there.
Here is the link. If you want to see the 485M in the M17XR3 please go to the link below, register and click "promote". It is much like a petition if we show there is much interest in this then that could help us. Go Vote! Hit promote on the Dell Ideastorm page!
IdeaStorm | M17X R3 485M Official Support Including 3D Support
There will also be a poll here on NBR just to gauge the response and activity. It is more important to register and vote on the Dell Ideastorm link.
So if you indeed are interested please take part in this.
Thanks!

Hope they will take a look

I hope more people post on the Ideastorm page.
Also I wrote both posts before I fully woke up so if anyone feels either post needs to be re-worded or has something to add please say something. -
by marketing I'd guess if it had been released the AMD/Ati GPU would never have been selected, I've said this for some time that it was a marketing issue

But the M17 R3 3D can't SLI 460M so only option is a single high end nvidia card.
It is not about ATI vs nvidia, I love them both and go to whatever gives me the best bang for the buck.
imo
M17:
*460M/560M
*6970
*485M
M18:

Thanks for the initiative. Hopefully Dell will make some kind of commitment before my 21 days runs out on Jun 20. I will have to decide if I should return my system or not. 485m is badly needed for 3D gaming, and definitely needed if you want your m17x to stay current for more than a year. -
After toying around with 3d for a month, I've decided that it is very nice to have, but not a necessity. I'm still glad I went the 3d route though, as the screen is very very nice, and I like the brightness. I voted for the 485m because the r3 is alienware's premier 17in laptop, and it should at least be able to compete in 3d with the 3d clevo (which has a 485m).
Vote and comment added. Hope an official dell reply gets back to us -
I agree too. What card do you have currently?
Im surprised so far, I would have thought more customers would want the 485m, after all it still is the best card out at the moment.
Keep em coming people! -
Im on the 460m (slight overclock). I believe the OP is also on the 460m
-
I think Dell/AW should just axe the 120hz 3d restriction for cards other than the GTX 460M as all high end cards (including the AMD cards) are capable of 3D. But for now, let's just get them to add 485M or 580M support
-
So please feel free to post this info on other social sites about Alienwares. Get more owners involved!
We need to get more promotes on the ideastorm post! -
I'm all for the 485. At least I get to keep my physx.
-
Thx for all of the feedback so far. Keep em coming and again I stress that a vote needs to be made on that Dell Ideastorm page.
Register, go to our thread, and hit promote on the left side of the post.
Thank you! -

Done . -
Lol look at all the AMD fans up top.
-
With all these threads popping up about 580M. If dell is convinced, do you think they might go with the 580M as an alternative rather than supporting the 485M?

I think R3 is capable if given a chance with a higher end nvidia card for 3D, with ATi offering it looks like a great config to me.
People interested in R2 capabilities have M18x , but I don't see revising a fairly new laptop with same Intel architecture is going to happen.
Edit: dell response on Idea-storm -
I personally would want the options now, and the new 28nm (I think?) gpus like the AMD 7xxx series and nvidia 6xx series should be put in an m17x r4 with ivy bridge
-
There is a response from Dell on IdeaStorm web site. Looks like there is a glimmer of hope. If you have not done so already, go register there and click promote button. Only 10 people have done it so far. It shows 100 but it goes up by 10 every vote.

the point is - when Dell chose the 6970 from ATI for none 3D machines the simply could not choose the 485m for 3D, the 3D can be turned off - you would then have as good or better 2D performance from the Nvidia based machine, nobody would have chosen the 6970 - it's as simple as that, I would even go as far as saying there was even some sort of contractural reason for making it impossible to fit a 485m yourself, the whole thing is way too complicated as Nvidia try to squeeze revenue from their 3D engine, it's time they all got together and let people have choices rather than forcing choices on the customer, the desktop market is open, you can choose whatever you want to use from what's available - that's how it evolved, why should laptops be any different

+1 voted..

It's under review
Hope they will accept it^^

voted, and commented! hoping for 485m/580m
-
Voted as well, hoping they add a higher card GTX 485m/GTX 580m or atleast the GTX 560m I am looking to buy a m17x R3 3D version asap
-
W00t Thx all.. Keep it up! More Votes on Dell IdeaStorm if you agree!
-
Keep this alive people!
Anyone here have experience with the ideastorm? -
I pretty much passed on the R3 primarily because a 485M wasn't available, the 460 wasn't strong enough, and I didn't want to deal with a 6970 for years. I know a lot of folks just went with the Clevo and passed up AW entirely due to this same issue. It'd be a good idea if they fixed this oversight asap, but I have to wonder how many sales they simply lost because they didn't do it from the get go.
AW seems to have fallen much in recent years, and if they want to get back on top they'd better consider what premium buyers want is what you give, period. Not "working on it". People expect options and premium components on a "mercedes" class product. Clevo got the memo and AW didn't. -
Thank you. -
I myself am waiting till they put in the 485m into the M17x before making a purchase.
-
Anyone that shares this same opinion, please post and "promote" on the Dell ideastorm.
Thanks! -
Patiently waiting and hoping for updates on nvidia GPUs in the coming weeks been stalking their site for 2 weeks. I only noticed they changed the art for the wireless card options
.... I feel like a freak.

Hopefully some new options come out soon
Some guys in the m18x forum have the date of 6/21/11 as the day some gpus will be released. Dunno if it will stick, considering all the other dates that were passed up already... -
We should have a much higher turn out on the dell Ideastorm. Theres 50 votes here and not 50 there
.. Promote people! Please?!
-
I had promoted ealier but left no comment. I added a comment today to try to keep things going.
-
Like when I went to do it, I thought it redirected me to our ideastorm page after I registered. I was only glancing at it since I was in the middle of fighting with Dell lol. I realized a bit later that the one I voted on wasn't the right one, so I went and found ours..
Maybe some others did the same? Just throwin that out there -
-
I do know this, the chance goes up as we get votes. It is positive that they at least replied and are considering it. The 560M option is nothing, its just a shinier 460M. We shal see...
Please people if you voted yes here, go to the Ideastorm link on the first post and also "Promote" our thread there.
Thanks again everyone that is involved! -
My current expectations are
560M 90%
580M 60%
485M 20%
chance of being supported and available for purchase.
Why?
* 560M ... Asus , MSI , Sager already have it and many more to come, just a refresh of 460M, going with the flow.
* 580M might be cheaper than 485M , new and in production and if Dell want to please the high end nvidia fans , it will opt for this .
* 485M possibly being phased out due to high price/lower demand than ATI 6970M. Dell might support it in software but might not offer as an upgrade/purchase. -
-
still think its a bum move to not have a top video card option with the 3D models. -
