Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has any experience with SSD with capacity over 256GB on the M17xR2. I was looking thru the Crucial web site and came across this.
512GB, 2.5-inch Solid State Drive, upgrades for Alienware M17xR2 Laptop/Notebook, CT1899642 from Crucial.com
It reads that it's guaranteed to work with the notebook. Dell says that the max capability is 256GB (could be that this is all they sell). If one was to purchase; do you (anyone) know if the 512 is truly compatible? Any info would be really appreciated...
Blessings,
Bone

$900.....
Anyone accepting kidney donations at this current time?
The R3 can't take advantage of S-ATA III devices as it uses a dated ICH-8/9 controller. -
R3? Even the first port? Its not off the SB chipset?
-
I thought the R3 had sata III speeds?
-
Same here, was under the impression it's Sata 3.0 capable...

-
Think its a typo as the OP was talking about R2
-
from the user manual:
Hard-Drive Storage
Interface • SATA 2.0 (3Gb/s) or SATA 3.0 (6Gb/s)
• Solid‑State Drive (SSD

Even though the HM67 claims to be SATA 6Gbit compliant, the ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E controller is not. I'll have to look into this some more.
-
Livid is probably talking about the r2. The r3 is definitely SATA III capable.
-
Hmm the manual would be lying then it says both ports support 3/6 and isn't port 0 part of SB?
-
yeah its sata 3 for sure

Nah, I think it definitely can.
Just needs to be plugged into the secondary bay. -
F's sake guys, I'm talking about the R3. Stop going off of Dell's supposed specs and look at Intel's.
A look at the Device Manager on my own R3 tells me that I have the older ICH8/ICH9 controller.
Edit: I just installed Intel's RST 10.6.0 driver, seeing that I was still using the base 8.6.2 driver from Windows 7 SP1. Now to see if I'll be eating my Nike's....Attached Files:

hmmmmm. interesting thanks, do you have a source?
-
Apparently the stock driver from Windows 7 sees the controller as being an ICH8/9M-E. Installing Intel's RST Tools corrects this problem. I guess I'll being having Nike's for dinner.

tomato sauce with that?

Nevermind. Glad it worked out
