Weird. Check if you indeed have the 580m.

Try calling Dell and see if they can send you the correct base panel.

Edit: Where can I see what the vent is supposed to look like? Anyone have any pictures if it up?

I've seen others with this base panel. I'll check the temps after i get my files on the comp but its cool and not warm anywhere.

AFAIK the extra vent was for the 6990's only. I could be wrong, or it could have just been a re-design they have slowly been replacing with the current design. Not sure.

I have one with the gtx 580m and it has the new extra vent by the nameplate. 6990m owners also reported they had the extra vent I guess dell ran out of the new base panel and shipped him an older one.

I just received my first of 3 Alienwares with the 580GTX (long story I'm only keeping one) which does not have the extra vent. Will report when the other 2 arrive over the next 2 weeks. The other 2 are going to be 3D systems this was not.

I called tech support the lady says the 3 vents is an older design and was discontinued...For some reason I feel like im being robbed. Tomorrow I'll get all the monitoring software and run furmark to see how it does. Glad I have no problems with my system everything was hooked up. Can't wait to play Starcraft II

Yeah but the 6990 uses the same power as the 6970 it technically shouldn't need it. But the 580m on the other hand.

Some models came with the grill near the 'nameplate' but there is no space for the extra vent. They kept the grill for some of the new models for more air intake (cooling).

I guess for you they forgot to add the back cover with the grill (maybe those were out of stock), but it does not make much difference, so nothing to worry about...

I fail to see how that extra vent would have any impact on the GPU.....seriously

They did not sent you the wrong nameplate, they sent you the 'normal' back cover. Someone in this thread has already posted a back picture with the 'grill'. If you want to argue with the dell support team, send them that picture and they should be able to handle it...

It doesn't. Maybe 2-3 degrees less... But if you keep it on your lap, then there is no meaning to it...

I received a nameplate that just said m17x instead of Vicious2500. I also sent the tech I was on phone with a photo of my base panel and the 3 vent base panel She stated the 3 vent base panel was from an older revision that was discontinued due to extra dust going to the gpu.

That really sucks! Anyone else receive the wrong nameplate? I wonder if they would send you a "corrected" one if you ask...

Their sending me a correct nameplate will take 5-7 business days. I was more concerned about the base panel and the internals of my comp than a nameplate doesn't affect performance.

Of course, just curious whether they honor changing nameplates... I'll be getting mine next Wednesday, I wonder which panel will be installed.

Thankfully they do and who knows which panel they'll grant u. I'm just happy I'm not posting a horror story like I've seen on here. Next step testing the gpu and providing some 2820/580 benches for the thread.

I'm impressed with the battery had a 95% charge out of the box ran 2 hrs on max performance and still have another 1 1/2 of bat life when I turned it off.

oc is topping the temps out at 65 which is good. but still, either 3dmark11 or the drivers is causing it to throttle to 2d clocks.. (not driver crash, just throttle, then comes back)

    but unreal 2.5 runs fine.

I heard that nVIDIA sets their cards to automatically down clock to avoid frying them, but that temp seems pretty low to have it down clock.
