If I decide to get a 580m could I use the 6990m heatsink?

Yes .

As lvl7 said, the heatsinks are compatible. The backplates are not. The 6990m backplate could damage the 580m

Hers's some pictures of the card. The guy wants $720 for it; it's brand new OEM Whats the problem with backplate?

From what I can see, that isn't a Dell card. The Dell backplate has a small rectangle on the left which covers some of the vram chips.
-
Does it have to be a Dell card?

So I shouldn't buy the card. I don't know where I would find a backplate that would work. Do you guys think this card is worth $707?
-
Well, the vram modules shouldn't overheat without this special plate, but it got reported, that the heat of the vram modules can cause trouble since it will heat up some components on the mobo next to the vram modules... that's only what I've read, not sure to which extent this really happens.
There was a big issue recently with r3s in Europe, they all came with the wrong backplate and suffered heavily from serious throttling issues, apparently also because the vram heat up some other components, which reportedly can even cause the bus clock to throttle... as mentioned, I have no r3 to confirm this myself.
Edit: Just to clarify, widezus second pic shows a 69xxm with a 580m backplate... the worst possible combination. -

Try calling Dell and ask for a quote for a 580M with heatsink (and logically it should have the backplate, hopefully the right one..).
-
-
What I did, because my R3 came with the wrong backplate, was buy a heatsink from these guys:
New Alienware Dell m17x r3 GPU Heatsink Complete J9H7X | eBay
The heatsink is wrong but I made sure I got the backplate in the picture.
I wouldn't get the 580m from upgradeyourlaptop as they are Eurocom and stock Clevo cards. I would keep searching for a Dell card. -

^^nice looking backplate there.
I guess some modding can be done to that backplate:
Solder a copper fin on the X bracket to cover the 2nd layer of memory chips, even replace the current one with a copper fin -
Yeah well my R3 came with some thermal pads stuck on the rest of the vram modules so I guess it is dissipating onto the mobo. Not had any problems though. Been running solid throughout and leading the bench rankings

the question is...why would you go 580m for $700+ when you already have the 6990m?
-
You're absolutely right SlickDude, especially when I'm already getting good scores on my benching. What the hell was I thinking!

The 580m's seem to get much better benching scores

I got a tad drunk and splurged on the upgradeyourlaptop 580M (if it works out i'm saving $600 compared to my quote from the Aus dell store of $1400AUS), am i correct in thinking that since i'm upgrading from a 460M, my heatsink/bracket thats in my 460M should be the same, as there is only 1 heatsink part listed in the MX17R3 parts list for nvidia cards, the others listed are for ATI cards.
I am tempted to buy the bracket listed in that ebay advert widezu69 posted as well. I'm not at home at the moment, so i thought hopefully someone here can confirm if my 460M bracket will suffice or if i should ebay the bracket too. -
I have a feeling that the 460m bracket is the same with the nvidia cards. What isn't is the heatsink. Since the 580m and 6990m's have come out, there have been heatsink revisions. Check page 1.

This is the backplate it comes with.

The backplate is the right size but it is missing a bit that should cover the chips on the left. Also the screws from the heatsink won't fit into the backplate as the screws are way too thick for the threads. I know this from experience.
-
where did you get your 580 and all the compatible hardware?
-
My 580m came with my laptop. The problem I had was that the factory used a 6990m backplate. So I just bought the extra heatsink that included the extra backplate:
New Alienware Dell m17x r3 GPU Heatsink Complete J9H7X | eBay
That heatsink is for the 460m which uses the same backplate as the 580m. I still have the heatsink lying around. You didn't need to buy those from Dell at all. Your fan and heatsink for the 6990m are all suitable for the 580m. Just not the backplate.
I know about the thin threads for from the Eurocom backplate as I've ordered GPUs from them before to go in the M15x which have the same size screws as the R3. -
widezu69
can u give me your 580m heatsink dell part no? as my configure dell is giving ati heatsink. i need to give them the correct part number for ordering the correct part. thanks. -
The 580m and 6990m have the same heatsink...
-
mine look like this...
-
O right well I don't know what the part number is sorry. Can't help there
-
cn-0xxxxx-00000-111-2222
wat i need is from 0xxxxx
appreciated if u could provide me.thanks.
-
hi i'm very new with all these things, but.. this means you can upgrade your GPU by yourself or what? thanks
-
I looked at my heatsink and it looks just like the one Widezu69 showed except mine doesn't have the 2 copper squares on each side of the heatpipes. They're there there just not copper. On the back of the card ,next to the backplate is a rectangular piece of thermal pad covering the VRam. I think he meant" lots of customers" not lost of customers

@worldedit hey that's really cool could you get me one?
-
actually that is m18x gpu 1 backplate, they call it L sharp backplate.
and for m18x gpu2 is using the I sharp backplate... u may drop dell a call and request for it
about the 580m heatsink with copper at ram area need to be confirm after i received the new heatsink from them, will giving the part no after i receive the heatsink. -
I just switched my 480M's backplate with the one that came on the 580M, so there's a metal piece covering some of the chips, its not covering the other bank like 3 posts above.
i've used my same heatsink and will monitor my temps before i order a new one. Currently idling at about 52C have yet to put it under any real load yet though. What sort of temps should i expect idling as well as under gaming load? -
I haven't tried the new bios yet to remove throttling, although i didn't seem to notice any major throttling, core clock stayed at 620 apart from one instance (where it seems to reset the driver and lost my screen details) that used to happen on my 460M in 3d also (i was running in 3d on the 580M at the time too).
At load in BF3 i was pushing 77C but usually stayed around the high 60's.
On a different topic, i repasted my CPU at the same time and im running about 10C cooler at all times
All round im happy so far, just need to keep testing for stability and try out the bios from widezu69 -
Hi Guys, Can you tell me more information about heatsink of 580M coz i have it on my Alienware m17xr3 too,but replace it from 460M to 580M and i'v got throtting so i have to change heatsink, mind is 460M heatsink i think is not good for 580m.
-
i am too in the same boat, but so far the heatsink part as far as I have gotten is
V1K2G 00001 ASSEMBLY...,HEATSINK...,VIDEO GRAPHICS ADAPTER...,N12E,GTX2,M17X
3MF8R 00001 CARD (CIRCUIT)...,GRAPHICS...,N12E-GTX2
I am assuming the backplate comes with the heatsink. I can imagine the 6990m heatsink is different from the 580m because looking at the 580m gpu itself the thing is bigger than what the 6990m copper heatsink covers.
I advise against using the 6990m heatsink for the 580m card as the copper space is smaller than the gpu die space.
Im getting the heatsink and supposedly the heatsink assembly comes with the backplate. I will post up pictures when i get it -
The copper space is actually exactly the same size. Only the black sticker on it is a different shape, it is cut into a diamond for the AMD card and a rectangle for the Geforce card. I've owned both and compared, no difference. The only difference is the amount of copper that covers the rest of the card.
-
@widezu69 Do you think you could post screenshots of both so we could compare?
-
Sure go to this post:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/8094032-post29.html
There you will see the comparison between the heatsinks. The 3rd pic is of the contact area. You see there is some kind of black cutout. I'm sure that once that is removed, both copper squares will be identical in size. -
Wow, I am a moron, it was a few pages back. Thanks for the info.
It's funny how I actually needed this info, and the thread came right up... wierd. -
So you got a 580m then...? You have the appropriate heatsink and backplate?
-
Haha, nah. Not yet. It's very tempting though. Just got nothing to do atm, so I'm doing a little research and what not.
What I found funny is your M17x came with a 6990M backplate for your 580M, yet mine came with a 580M backplate for an AMD card?
These people at Dell are just...... yeah -
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
I was just comparing pics of the 6990m card and 460m and it looks like everything is in a similar place on both cards. Do you guys think I should move pads around for my 6990m when it gets here? Just wondering because the last 6990m I had my machine wouldn't recognize the card. Could pads in the wrong place been part of the issue?
-
Just a heads up, for those who have got a 3rd party 580M, be wary on the A09 bios, i recently reformatted (the first time since installing the 580M, upgraded from a 460M) during the process of installing drives i updated my bios to A09 and my system no longer detected the 580M, had some issues with 460M, after sitting on it for a day i rolled back to A08 and like magic, it works again.
I was getting BSOD's right after the black windows screen, just prior to theusual login screen coming up.
