I got my laptop today, downloaded the 3dmark06 and it only pushed a 13k...When I had it before I pulled a 14.1.
Curious, could this thing be stuck in stealth mode, if so how do I get it out?
Also I'm thinking the guy didn't put in the right driver, when I goto change resolution it says the display is like a Mobile PC or PC Display, should it state ATI 5870 for the display if the driver is right?
Also other thought maybe does the turbo mode software have to be installed for the processor to utatlize it? It would make sense to get a 13k with dual vid cards at only 1.6ghz, when it should be pushing 2.8 it would most likely double or at least add another 8-10k in score?
Thanks!

Install the newest driver, and make sure it's set to Performance in CCC. Also make sure your Windows power management is set to High Performance. I don't think Stealth Mode is on if you pulled a 13K. The turbo mode software does NOT have to be installed. In fact, I've heard that it doesn't even do anything. No, you won't double your score. You may add another 2-3K. I think it's got to do with CCC performance and Windows performance settings myself.

Well this comp pulled a 14.1 before the second card was added sooo I'd imagine it should pull at least a 18k or more with 2 cards.
What is this CCC, is that Catalyst Control thing or what it is? Could that put my score in the right range if it is not in performance, I already set the power settings to high performance so that shouldn't be an issue.
Also latest drivers being from Dell? Thats the drivers I just downloaded, haven't installed can't till after work... -

Yes, CCC and Windows power management will mess with your scores. I used to have the 720QM, and you're not going to pull an 18K in 3DMark'06 with it. Sorry. Here's a screenshot. I won't even inject any sarcasm O's like you've included in your first sentence there.

Thanks talon but now I'm confused, I pulled a 14.1 with one video card, he said he added another video card, which it does show 2 vid cards now, but your saying my score won't increase, or that it maybe already had 2 video cards?
Or maybe it only had 1 video card he added a second but regardless with my current cpu it will limit the second video card performance?
Thanks again man, sorry for the questions, new to this alienware stuff -

I don't know how you got a 14.1K with a 5870 and a 720QM. My cards are even overclocked in that benchmark. If you want to put up big numbers, you need to get a 920XM or 940XM. Check eBay.

I gave him the laptop back, he said he had them put in a second video card and a new motherboard...Of course he raised the price 300 dollars for the additional video card but still at 1650 I figured It was a good deal.
He says he added a second vid card, but your saying that with 1 vid card a 14.1 is high sooo I'm thinking maybe it had 2 and he got another 300 outta me, I dunno -
I also get those scores CollegeKid. So don't worry. The difference between one vid card and two for 3d 06 is minimal. 06 is also CPU intensive so try Unigine or Vantage

I didn't know that a whole extra GPU was that negligible in '06. Yes, do try Vantage. It's even getting outdated, but it's more accurate than '06.

What it says for Display is correct. You need to make sure the Display Adapters both say ATI 5870 /HD 5800 series in device manager.
I had a 720 and 5870 in my last lappy and it only scored 13660. But that was older drivers too. A second graphics card does make a big difference in 3dmark06 scores. Try reinstalling your video card drivers and check xfire in CCC. After an uninstall and reinstall of drivers you should have correct defaults, incl. xfire and powerplay. -
Well, I have a 720 QM and two 5870's and barely pull 14K in '06. I thought that was what was expected...

Yea I think I'm done....I can't seem to jump over 13k...I've done all the updates, vbios, 10.10 extreme drivers. update to 10.10c hotpatch, and still nothing...I ran that 3dvantage and got like a 9500 or something, but can't run it again after I changed all my settings and what not.
On top of that the blu-ray slot load is busted, but I don't feel like spending 87 bucks to ship it to the US, have it fixed and then 87 bucks to ship it back.
Think I'll pick up a dvd external drive tomorrow and just load up the games, but still undecided.
The laptop is blazing fast on everything but for some reason sucks it on benchmarks. Dunnnno anymore -
That is pretty crazy that going from a 720 to a 940 nets me almost 7k more in 3dMark06.
Not to mention my old M15x with an 820 and 1 260m scores almost 12k. -
Guys, 3DMark06 is really CPU dependant. It's based on 4 year old systems. Your going to see a higher jump in score if you overclock the CPU. GPUs work well and stock a 920XM and dual 5870s will get you about 18k-19k.
Here is my best OCed single 5870 with a 920XM

My out of the box 3dmark06 when I had my i5 was 14.6k. Was that simply because of the higher CPU clock then? I would have thought even the lowest i7 would beat it or at least be on par.
-
I dunno, but if thats true dajohu than my m17x is junk...I could do a reformat and try again but at this point it is blazing fast on everything...Minus the lower benchmarks and blu ray the laptop is rocking...Gonna look for a dvd player today on base...Load up some games, I'd imagine they run just fine.

When i had my 1st m17x with a 720qm and cf 5870's , my 3dmark06 was high 13k and it broke 14k once. Results are quite fluctuating on this test for some reason. I think it depends on what processes you have running in the background whilst the bench is running - you will never get the same result twice running back to back benches.
Now, my current system (below) pulls in a 3dmark06 of 16.5k tops and a 3dmarkvantage of 14k tops.
Unigene heaven on this system pulls down 32.0 fps on base settings.
Conclusion: your scores are pretty standard for your configuration so dont worry about it. Run some other benches like vantage and unigene heaven and see how you score on those. Although you have a quad core cpu, systems with more "straight line cpu power" like the 620m (not a quad core cpu) will perform better in heavily dependant cpu benchmark programs due to their clock speeds being faster..
Cant recall the base clocks of all cpu's but i think a 620m is 2.66ghz which is significantly faster than a 720qm with its 1.73ghz.
Hope this helps and dont stress out as sounds to me like your system is punching out the correct kind of numbers - sit back and have some fun with it!!! -
I loaded up sniper at lunch and it's pretty darn smooth, I tell ya though when those fans kick in, I'm suprised the back end doesn't start to lift off.
