Speaking of the upgrade, why don't you go to 6970 or 6990s instead of the 5870s?

I'm pretty sure they will replace with 5800's if you are still warranty and your card goes bad.

You will never find mobile gpus at retail stores. Best place is the marketplace section in the forum, Ebay, or the MXM Upgrade site.

Yeah, are the 6000 series soooo much more $$$$ that they arent worth it? I dont know, I havent bothered to price it. Heck, couldnt you just buy one 6990 and it would be better then 5870s in crossfire?

An overclocked 6990M is about on par with CF 5870 at stock clocks. The 69xx series cards have 2GB of VRAM, more shaders, and are infinitely more capable of handling tessellation. They are 40nm technology as well. Get two of them in CrossFire, and the 5870s don't stand a chance. You will pay about $800 for two 6970s. You can cover half of that just by selling your 5870s. Any way you work the numbers, it is much cheaper than an M18x. Plus, you retain the R2s gorgeous display.

I agree with everything that Turbod and DR said R2 is a definite keeper for me as well! This system is amazing, and with the support of this forum it is truly "All Powerful"!

@DR650SE I am looking forward to a tutorial on that gun metal gray chassis!

If you get the 5870's through Dell that is the only way to have them covered by warranty, If you buy aftermarket ones Dell will not cover them. Your system warranty is not harmed at all.(As long as you keep your ORIGINAL factory shipped system components. So keep your 4870's and do NOT sell them, unless you have no warranty. Now in the case of a replacement or a depot repair you have to install the 4870's back in. You will be fine as long as you don't break anything while installing, and you do not sell your 4870's.

2 6970's are up to 50% better than 2 5870's, 6990's are slightly better than 6970's. So it is a good upgrade, a 920xm which goes for about $250-300 is a good investment and you will notice a huge improvement.

Dell will not replace a 4870 or 5870 with a 6*** series card, as they are not "Officially" supported in the R2.

    I just went through this..

    Thanks
    Mike
