Should be as far as I know. I don't have either card though so maybe someone who has experience with both can help you out more. :)

Thanks Tony. My 680m is bodged in with a 7970m and the idle temps and in game temps are creeping a bit higher each day. Problem is, Heat sinks are almost impossible to get hold of in the UK, particularly the 680m heatsink, although i have found a 675 heatsink on ebay.

Yeah it is, what's important is the X-Bracket as the card has 4GB. You bought it from upgradeyourlaptop so no worries, it's shipped with the right one.

no problem bud, as to your thermal issues, what type of thermal paste are you using? and did you make sure to evenly tighten the heatsink down so get the best coverage?

Yeh, im using IC Diamond. Pretty sure ive got it installed nice and even but with the AMD cards, the GPU die sits in a diamond shape where as the Nvidia sits square, if you know what i mean, dont know if that would eventually effect temps as they AMD heat sink wouldnt sit face to face with the nvidia card. It would be a square on top of a diamond, if that makes any sense at all lol.

yea I'm not sure either. I upgraded from a 460m to my 6990m a few months ago and my 6990m has always ran super hot. I'm not sure why (difference in heatsinks maybe as the 460m is a 75watt card and the 6990m is a 100watt). My 460m has been on the fritz lately though, so I might see if I can snag a 580m as a replacement, but we shall see what I end up with. :)

There were revised heatsinks versions due to 580m thermal throttle, I got mine with the new one; has a rectangular black cover.

my 460m actually had that black thing too, but I had to take it off as the AMD gpu die is diagonal while Nvidia has their's horizontal. good to know they have that on the 580m heatsink though. :) +rep

I was consistently hitting 100C+ temps while trying to do anything and it was really frustrating. Took the take off just to experiment and temps now usually run 60C-80C under load. Not awesome, but it functions so I can't complain. :p

Well that highly engineered piece of metal didn't stop the thermal throttle. :D The power throttle thanks to vbios mods and unlocked 08.

FYI, dell do sell the 680 heatsink (complete with pads) in the UK (or did a while ago). Quote:'With the graphics card you will have to pay also for the heatsink, with the price of 9.43 £'

But that is for their 2gb card so the X-bracket might not be the same (the 4gb card has some memory chips on the underside I believe).

Yeh, Dell UK sent me to www.upgrade.co.uk and they said they will source one and get back to me. Called me back and said it was £50. Never heard from them again after that, called the a few times and they never call back.

That link is a B2B IT service? And £50 is just ridiculous, I believe they are $24 in the US and I was quoted £9.00

I called the support number and asked about an upgrade. It wasn't available at the time but when it came in they emailed me with the total costs to go to a 680, and to call to confirm. At a total of over £1K I choked but the heatsink price was sweet.

You probably will not be able to try this way since as soon as you ask for a 680 heatsink they will say it's not approved for your model. Then it's down to whether the guy will go the extra mile and find the part number?

Yeh that's the link Dell gave me.

Crazy really. This mob have to import it for you.

1k is outrageous even for a new release.

Sure is! They told me that a video card is NOT on the list of parts that are user replaceable, unlike HD's or memory, and I would also have to use the in-home service at a cost of £100.00. If you're interested I can PM you the message from dell support with the individual prices, but I got told not to post 3rd party email's here so I haven't :D

I think they just add 30%-50% built-in support costs to any part they sell?

Almost totally contradicts everything the US reps on here say. Seems, Dell US trust's its buyers more then then UK.

    UK engineering maybe? :p

Oh and yeh, ping us the email please mate.

I've worked with dell in quite a few countries including the US. What you get from US reps is the company 'line' on what is or is not supported. When it come to the local contractors dell use in each country it becomes a different interpretation. They use what is considered 'acceptable and normal' for the region. For example, in some Eastern European countries they refuse ANY support if you have replaced any part youself. They can be made to stick to dell's policies but they will always try the cheapest option first and make you contact corporate dell to push it.

    Email to follow :)

Well, installed the 675m heatsink and its actually a really good fit, bar the rectangular black tape on the die transfer plate.

Something i have noticed, that is quite worrying, is the blue thermal pads that are supplied by Eurocom (upgradeyourlaptop) leave behind an oily residue on the VRAM modules. At first glance i thought i had water on my GPU.

Has anyone else seen this? Should i be concerned?

Hey Tony, i have a spare 6970 / 7970m heatsink that will just gather dust here. If you wanna sort it out and pay the postage, i'd be happy to send it to you free of charge.
