While switching the igpu off, and running all my games on ultra settings. I never see my GPU temps go above 64C I am OC'd at 915/2250. I ran a 3dmark11 has a great p7309 score, still never see the temp above 64C. Mind you, I'm stable throughout this 5 hour gaming session and the mark11 test. Never lose my OC due to throttling.

But then, I run the Kombuster stability test for an hour run. My OC is still stable but my temps reached a max of 75C. Now don't get me wrong I'm not complaining that I can run ultra settings OC'd and stay below 65C.

My question is, why does it never go above 64C after a 5 hour game session on Crysis 3 ultra settings, but hits 75Cin just one hour of Kombutser?

Are the games just not that demanding compared to the Kombuster stability test?

I think that is all it is. I notice that as drivers update for new games arrive the temps go down in those games. :)

That seems logical to me :D

Might be a little off topic but another question, while i have igpu on, I can't play crysis 3. When the game loads. It shows my GPU usage at 0% and it's just running the igpu. All other games will register and switch to my 680 but crysis will not. I have to FN+F7 and turn off igpu to get it to play. Any thoughts?

Only checking the profile for the game in the driver (white listing). Look under 'manage 3D settings'>program settings, and find the game. I am told you can set the preferred GPU (or maybe set high performance in power management?), not having one it's a pure guess

Seems about right, kombustor is supposed to stress the gpu in the worst case scenario, games actually dont use 100% all the time, depends i guess on the game. Temps seem similar to mine anyways.

FN+F7 doesnt actually work on mine anymore, the pop up doesnt come up, just run on igpu/optimus all the time (win 8 uefi/safe/secure boot). Just 'check for updates' in the nvidia control panel or nvidia experience, its probably not downloaded the game profile so it defaults to the wrong one. Or to make double sure you can whitelist the crysis3.exe file to use the nvidia gpu in the nvidia control panel, or find the shortcut/exe file and right click and run with nvidia high performance gpu.

You paid for the card with better drivers/stability, so I would personally use the igpu/optimus and leave it on, just the odd occasion I have to right click on the shortcut and run with high performance gpu.

I know I set the global to high performance but I will look into manually changing it for the game itself and see if that works. I can add that before I flashed my GPU and before the crysis 3 update finished installing it was able to play and switch automatically. After my flash and the update finished is when this occurred.

Can't see a GPU flash causing this in one game only. Is there an option for GPU selection in the profile?

I would think DDDenniZZ's sugestion to right click on the launch icon seems easy enough for just one game :)

The flash shouldn't have any affect i hope. Since crysis 3 updates probably nvidia control panel defaulted to the igpu since the .exe file most likely changed due to the update. Just refresh the updates and it should get the profile back, otherwise just right click is the easiest way to kick in the optimus gpu. Happened to me with sim city, no idea why it wanted to use the igpu, maybe the updates, who knows.

Surprisingly, after trying all of the above it still doesn't switch. :(

I'm in the process of reinstalling it. Maybe that will fix it?

In the manage 3d settings - 'program settings' tab, does crysis 3 show up in the drop down box? and what preffered graphics processor is used for it?

Yes, it is there and it says preferred use global settings (auto-select Nividia GPU) I switched it high performance I tried changing the global setting itself to the GPU. Still nothing.

Hmm, sounds like a weird issue, might be worth going into nvidia experience and getting it to reinstall the drivers. Don't have crysis 3 so I can't help you with the game specifically, but I dont see why it shouldn't work.

You mean the Nividia driver itself (314.22)?

select clean install to replace any profiles. You'll need to put back in any global changes you made - couldn't keep quiet could I??

Doesn't look like you can reinstall from geforce experience anymore :(, but yeah, maybe a reinstall might fix it, a 'upgrade install' first, if that doesn't fix your issue, then try the 'clean' install option in the setup menu for the latest drivers. (Bear in mind, you lose all your custom program settings/nvidia control panel settings when its a clean install btw).

Also check you have relatively new intel drivers?

I think I may know what happened. After the game installed I immediately refreshed games in GeForce experience and played it so I could Optimize the game, later saw there was an update. Installed the update then flashed. So I think the updated real .exe it's using is only showing this small game file and the computer is saying. " oh, I can run that on igpu" I have a hunch that after a new install and waiting for the update then refreshing in GeForce experience will fix it. :D

I never saw anything below 47. Usually low to mid 50 and 70-80 in small areas.

I have the latest drivers that came on the resource disk I used when I clean installed for my SSD. But I don't think it's drivers. It worked fine until I updated the game/flashed the GPU.

Great temps, (advice) never use Kombustor / Furmark; excessive power draw. For advanced game settings you can try nvidia inspector latest version 1.9.7.1, I don't know if it can cause conflicts with geforce experience.

For a quick only gpu core load test (PCI Express speeds test), GPU-Z select standalone install, click bus interface "?" to open the render test http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2221/TechPowerUp_GPU-Z_v0.6.9.html

One question, while installing the 680m did you see a black rectangular insulation tape on the gpu heatsink (die area limit) ?

Yes, there was the black tape on the heatsink. I removed it because the die on the 680m was larger than the die on the 660m.

I get 67c max on my 680m on Bioschock Infinite Bench and 3D Mark 11, on max OC stock voltage. My GPU is always on, because I have the 3D monitor.
