Does anyone know which card is better from a performance perspective? Not talking about memory size, because I know the 460m has the advantage there.

I was looking up the specs on both websites (nvidia and amd) and both use different notations making it somewhat confusing.

the 6870m beats the 460m. And both are great overclockers.

decision should be based on personal usage:

NVIDIA's dGPU offering if you need or desire physx/cuda support, or you are ever even going to consider 3D gaming (internally/externally) at all...

AMD's dGPU offering if you need or desire flat out fps/benchmarking speeds...

People don't confuse the guy, let me put it simply.
Either you go for the 6970m for flat out amazing performance that can run all games on max settings, or you go for the 460m for 3d, absolutely no point in getting an Alienware laptop and then choosing the 6870.

note in terms of benchmarking its wierd actually the 6870m is faster. Maybe due to the MUCH HIGHER pixel shaders but when you compare everything else the specs are quite close. In terms of gaming performance both of them should be really close so most of the games might run with a difference of 5-10 frames.

But note nvidia 460m gpu has alot more features compared to a 6870 like physix/cuda and such even 3d support.

Point taken, but simply pawning off the 460m as a "3d only" video card is a bit of an exaggeration. I have the 460m, and all but one game I've played have performed wonderfully. L4D, ME2, Crysis 1 demo, Crysis 2, Wow, and SC2. 30+ fps typical with max settings and 1440x900 resolution.

Crysis 1 demo is the only game I noticed the 460m struggle a bit in "very high" settings @ 1440*900. Scale it back to "high" graphics settings though and im getting 40+fps.

All things considered, the 460m is a perfectly fine card for 2d and 3d gaming. I was just curious how it compared to the 6870 is all, and it looks like the concensus is that there is no concensus :D

    Then I'll give you a concensus :D
The two cards perform similarly with so much more benefits (3d, 120hz screen, Physx, etc.) offered by the 460m. And I never said 460m is a weak card, I just said that the 6970 is much stronger and will give you top performance for a much longer period of time, but between the 460m and the 6870 it's really no contest ;)

    +1, this.

when purchasing the M17x R3, it should more or less boil down to 460M (while not the fastest/more features overall) vs. 6970M (the fastest/less features overall), with 6870M being the last option...
