I just got in my 7970m from DELL. They told me it was a kit, it wasn't.

    7970m - 747m2 - is just the card.

Would it be possible/wise to use a 6870m on the 7970m or do I have to go though the process of getting another order from Dell E-Parts?

If I have to, is there anywhere else I could buy the heatsink/thermals instead?

It should be possible that the heatsink, cross brace. and screws of the 6870m should be compatible. Test buy removing the brace and heatsink from the old card and attach it to the new. Have some very thin wax paper (like the ones dentists use) between the heat sink and the core. if you can get it out then there isnt enough contact. If it stays you can use thermal paste and everything should be ok. Make sure you have some backup thermal pads for the ram as well. You might be able to use the old ones but it is best just to be safe :)

And yes there are sites on ebay and other members on the board that can direct you to more official thermals.
