This is actually a very important aspect. As much as I've tried to dismiss the 3D as just a gimmick, the few reviews so far have been positive. I'd rather order a 3D capable system and buy the stronger card later. If the 485M isn't available later I wonder if the 6970M will be compatible with the 3D screen R3's.....

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that people who think they will be using 3D in the next few months/years should order the PC with the 460M and then upgrade later on to the 485M (IF EVER AN OPTION) but most likely 560M will be an option.

There is nothing that indicates the 6970M will ever work with the Nvidia integrated 3D system in the R3.

doesn't matter anyway - r3 doesn't have an amd transmitter.

If you buy the 3d kit from nvidia it has an external transmitter. I am positive that amd cards will be able to run 3 d on the 120 it will just require their kit which surely will have an external receptor/transmitter.

I'd pay double to avoid using a chiclet keyboard. ;)

Isn't the keyboard almost separated enough to be a chiclet? I was looking at your pictures, and the keys look like there's some space between them...
At the very least, it makes sense to call and find out the 6970M's ETA to the US store.

Oh ok, the white lines and dark lighting definitely fooled me.

Hmm, I'm going to have to make a decision once the 6970M shows up. This w/ 6970M or P17 w/ 485M?

Let's not confine ourselves within a single square. There are good chiclet keyboards out there as there are bad classic KB's. I'm a long term ThinkPadd er myself, but have to admit that some chiclet KB's and hybrids are really outstanding (Elitebooks) even though it takes time to switch and adjust. R1 and R2 was ok in terms of KB, but not outstanding, imho.

BTW, I'd rather worry about keyboard lag, far more important point here ;)

Agreed. I couldn't stand the W860CU chiclet keyboard, every stroke felt like the keyboard was going to break in half, not to mention after using the WASD keys all day i noticed some of the keys started to squeak, I guess that could happen to any keyboard.

My T60p keyboard was the best keyboard I ever had.

so with this new video card "6970" that are going to be in the r3's does this mean they are going to be able to compete with the r2's? or are they even better now?

also is the new 6970 better then my crossfire 5870's?

Not better but as good as 5870CF and in some rare cases faster by few frames only so far
Some people still question the benchmarks though

Based on the available data, which is scant by comparison to mature cards, I'd say with SB CPU and IGP functionality, yes. For power, yes as well.. I think in games that utilize CF tech it edges the single 6970 by a slight margin.

wow so with the new video card these r3's are just as good as the r2s lol i just bought this thing two days ago, i really like it though, red is so awesome.

but what about the processors, a 920xm OC are better then those CPUs, so wouldnt that make up for it if the new 6970 only leads by a slight margi

It's a bit early for such a claim. We still don't know how good is the cooling and will there be some stable OC'ing headroom.

Eh, ok. That wasn't what the poster asked. I just formed the conclusion based on available data, which is scant.

Either way, it's not a discussion of value.

My guess, 6970M will perform better when finalized and paired with a SB CPU. It may even beat the 485M.

Not really. An OC'd CPU really means little at 1080p, in all but a few types of games.

At 1080p the Sandy Bridge is more than sufficient, regardless of what frequency you can push on the i7-920XM.

Maybe, maybe not. Either way, they're both great cards, and have a lot of life ahead of them for purchasers and that's all that really matters.

As always, if you're happy with your rig, stick with your rig. Chasing the latest and greatest becomes more important than enjoying what you've got, which is the reason you bought the thing in the first place: entertainment.

Your setup has a few years at least before it really shows its age, I wouldn't sweat it.

i wonder how much money the new r3's are going to cost with the CPU and GPU the highest they offer and the harddrive normal size.

i dont think i can get it for this good of a price though i just bought mine for $1600 it was a killer deal id say. "specs in sig"

Likely not. Just enjoy your rig, 8 months down the line the Next Big Thing will be out and you can throw that in if you're so inclined.

That's too bad...the R2 keyboard flexes and it's not evenly backlit. Really cheesy keyboard really for such an expensive machine.

    Ah, ok.

I'm actually feeling quite the opposite. I'm wishing I could get ATI 3D so I can have the quality of it's drivers and advanced video features compared to nVidia.

Thread closed. Thank the folks who derailed the thread with bickering and turning it into another R2 vs R3 flame fest. Trust me folks, this will not be allowed to continue. I suggest you seriously review the forum rules before posting.
