i want to run 3d out to an hdmi 1.4 tv. The 6970m is far superior to the 460m for a gpu, so what i want to know is:

Do the alienware m17x r3 with the ati 6970m come with hdmi out 1.4? if so, then there is software by tridef and iz3d that will make 3d work through the hdmi cable.

EDIT: the amd/ati website states that the gpu supports 3d on certain displays, so does that mean it should have it?

i do think that you need the 120hz screen for the 3d to work, but im not 100% sure on that.

but on an external display? i know that for a fact, the asus g73 without the 3d display but with the 460m, will output 3d to a 3dtv via hdmi 1.4. but no, you can't use the screen on the laptop to 3d game.

Is the hdmi 1.4 part of the graphics card, or something that the manufacturer chooses to put on the computer itself.

the r3 with the 6970m DOES come with HDMI 1.4, i just confirmed. so you will be able to do what u wanted, as long as the tv also supports 3d.

    awesome news! thanks!

apparently, nvidia 3d vision only works with nvidia cards, but the amd can use other software made by 3rd parties. Tridef and iz3d both work with nvidia AND amd hdmi 1.4 cards.

Now i just need to decide if i should
    A) get the m17x with the more powerful ATI card, but have less support for 3d games (which is 90% of what i'll be doing on it)
    B) get the m17x with the nvidia and 3d vision, and be happy with it until i need to upgrade (hopefully they will offer a 485m upgrade compatible with the 3d screen.
    C) wait until the m18x is announced (if ever) because it will probably have better specs, but be expensive as hell.

From what i've read, most people think the 460m will be fine for almost all games, as 3d runs in 720p through hdmi 1.4. but what about the new Elder Scrolls?

How much do 3D kits and 3D tvs cost? Is it possible to buy a decently sized TV+the 3D glasses kit (2 pairs of glasses plz) for something around ~$500? Just curious that's all. Most tv's I've ever seen at BB which have "3d" are in like the 1k range.

i bought a 50" samsung 3d (it's 720p though) plasma from best buy in canada for 699 on boxing day, and that is canadian. It'd be less in the us. You can get the glasses that are cheaper than the samsung ones on ebay... i think they are around 60ish each? my main tv is a 63" plasma, but it was way more.

Way more tvs will have it as an option next year, so maybe wait a little longer if you can't afford it yet. But i was surprised at the price of the 50 when i saw it.

    WOW.

So, 3d "capable" tvs... are they capable because they're 120hz+? Or do they come with an emitter(receiver? thingy?) or is it built in, which makes it 3d "capable"? Are glasses included too, or do you buy those? And does that come with the thingy to plug into the tv? Or is it the tv which does the "emitting"?

Sorry, I'm really new to the 3D thing.

it shouldnt be to hard to project 3d simply because its how the TV projects it that with the correct glasses our eyes see the image, "3d capable" should mean hardware wise, to be able to support 120hz, and through that, all it becomes is software related on how to project the image. i think, again im not 100% certain

Yeah, the only major difference is that the 3dtvs come with an hdmi 1.4 input, allowing them to receive a 3d image. There is software too of course, so they can display it.

I REALLY want a gtx 485m, but the clevo laptops are so unappealing to me, especially compared to the alienware systems. So torn....
