Looking at my temps with GPU-Z and HWInfo32, and the "shader sensor" temp is always really high. Like almost 70* at idle. I just want to know where it as at on the card. Basically, what components on the card are being read for temps? I want to upgrade the thermal pads, and already did it with the memory with success. Now, time for the shader temps.

All 3 temps are on die. Just replace the paste and u will see the improvement. However, no matter what u do it is the highest. Mine is about 9C higher than others on 100% load.

70° C is too much on idle make sure you replace your thermal paste every time you remove the heatsinks.

I have and I do. The GPU idle is like 56* on idle, but just that one sensor for "Shader" is near 70*.

If its at 70 all the time then something is up but if it spikes up to 70 and then down to the 50s(back and forth) i would not worry about it to much since the fans are almost non existent while idling .

I still say switch to IGP unless playing a game since it takes 2 seconds and saves power and unwanted heat internally.

My shader temp is about 6-7 degrees give or take higher then the rest on this card and i am not even remotely concerned . Thats what a warranty is for so dont sweat it.

It stays high like that all the time.. MemIO or whatever the second sensor is, is usually 4-5* higher than the GPU temp, and the shader is usually 10* higher.

If you have cleaned the card properly and replaced the paste/pads etc etc then its just the card or the way the heatsink is manufactured since they are not all equal clearly.

If its really bugging you then just call Alienware and ask them to replace the card because of abnormal idle temps .

Make sure if you call your running the stock Dell drivers for the AMD card or they will try to use that as an excuse for your issue.

I had mine replaced recently for something different but they will make you jump through some hoops to get a replacement like running Uniengine and monitoring it with GPUZ , stuff like that.

Just a note, my laptop is propped up and has the Coolermaster U3 laptop cooler under it, two fans positioned under the fans and one under the area where the GPU and CPU are. Shouldn't I be seeing lower shader temps?

I got that problem with one of my cards. On load it was reaching 106.5C while the rest of the die was 92C. I helped reduce it by undervolting, but I'm beginning to think its a design flaw as at least two other people are experiencing the same thing and it's seen in different laptops.
