Right now according to hwinfo, my gpu is idling at 56-58C. This seems kinda high to me or is this normal?

    Mine idles at 59-61c

Edit: I should add that I've monitored in game temps with GPU-Z, and after 2 hours of Crysis 2, the GPU never got hotter than 74c. The fans do a nice job when they ramp up. I had an 8800GT in my old desktop that routinely hit 90c. Modern GPUs are pretty warm by nature.

Yeah my idle temps are pretty much identical to yours and it will ramp up sometimes to 63 when the clocks start jumping around even on the desktop with nothing happening.

inap's idle temps are around 48-50 and his load temps were also quite abit cooler then mine but he replaced his thermal pads for some thinner ones which i might do down the road.

My load temps sitting on a flat table hit around 78 and 74ish if i prop up the back end abit .

I am fine with my load temps but i would not mind some better idle temps :) . If i am doing alot of web browsing and not gaming then i just switch over to the IGP since there is no need to keep the ATI card active so its probably not a huge deal anyhoo.

When I use Hwinfo32 my GPU fanspeed shows 400rpm Max. Is there anything wrong with it? Or thats the max speed?

The fans sound like my 2000 rpm desktop fans. I'm not sure if any program monitors the fans correctly cause its hard to believe they're only going 400 rpm under load. They sound much much faster.

exactly..I am not sure if hwinfo32 is showing it wrongly coz I hear them going faster too lol..

Anyone know any software which can be used to monitor temp + fan speed?

    TYIA!!

Well in any case, I may not be getting accurate RPM measurements but at least I know they're working. Temps stay in the 85C range in Furmark using 800/1000 clocks. On top of that they're flipping loud.

My beast hit 85C the other day while playing Crysis 2 for less than hour at stock clock (no idea abt overclocking).

    Is that considered normal?

Yeah I'd say its normal. Unless you manually control the fans, they'll respond only to temperature so they won't ramp up until they reach certain thresholds. From most of the numbers being reported here the fans stay pretty lazy up until the 80c range. Then they get unbearably loud.

I work at a computer repair shop and its pretty darn hard to fry modern CPU and GPUs with heat alone. You should see some of the dust clumps, broken fans, and sad re-paste jobs customers bring in; thankfully chip manufacturers have their chips equipped with reliable throttling and shutdown thresholds.

thanks shadowyani! The fan sound is bearable for R3 unlike what I heard of R2 owners (feels like plane taking off, etc. :D)

I am overall very happy with the cooling system of R3 but I am still planning to buy a CM Storm SF-19. Just love the looks of that cooler and paranoid also I guess.

Well I did repaste it so I expected it to be a bit lower than before.

It probably is more efficient than Dell's paste so your fans are just going to daydream more often to maintain the same temperatures :p

Those temps are in-line with what I see on my R3. around 60c idle and 74 to 78 under load.

True. 58-63c idle. Will repaste soon with mx-4. I'll let you guys know what the idle temps would be after repaste.

I'm going to repaste mine during my off hours when I can. I'm going to have to wait til my new LCD arrives though; I plan on having everything opened up all at once so I don't have to take it apart twice.

I do expect the temperatures to be more or less the same though based on the behavior I've seen from fan controllers in the past (they just get lazy when your paste is picking up the slack, which is great, cause silence is golden).

I've repasted mine from the first day when I got it (also I have changed the thermal pads). At idle is at ~55.

If I use the dedicated GPU (mostly for the games), I overclock it to 800/1100 and at a full load does not go above ~75.

I changed the paste for the CPU as well (MX-4) and when I use the integrated GPU for browsing, music, word processing (all basic stuff), never goes above 55. Most of the time it's at 50 and I never hear the fans running.

As a matter of fact, I removed the back cover for almost 2 hours to see if the fans ever start during the 'basic' work and maybe 1% was used :)

It is a good idea to repaste everything, the system is silent but will become even quiter this way and yes, you extend the life of your system...
