Well one problem solved and bammmm i get a new problem.

The bios keeps getting me discrete graphics not detected. Problem started after i did a restart as the ram usage of the system was over 3gb. Before restart i had no problems. Had just installed Alan Wake and played it for a few min just to test it other then that no hardcore gaming.
I have left it to power drain for 10 min and will test again but a bit odd that it would kick the bucket without any warning ( high temp, anomalys, artifacts etc.)

Temps were idle ...depending on the fan anyting from 58-66 at idle. Load was near 74c.

Bad part is that it is not the stock GPU. It came with the 6870m and it replaced it. Strange is that the 6870m heatsink had been scewed on the 6870m so hard that the screws head was damaged and the pastick lock spaces had been crushed under the pressure (It should be locked on the screw but after removing it the spacers were on the backplate  )

    notebook (M17x R3) is 2 weeks old.

Update. I took it apart and the core was covered with IC-7 OK .When cleaning the GPU I saw that it had a small cray blurred line on it (not a scratch) did a repaste with MX-2 and it detected the GPU but in windows random white lines appeared on the screen :( did a reboot and GPU is gone again.

So the GPU is dead ? :(

DH, do you still have the 6870? Can you swap it to see if your graphics card is detected?

IC diamond will scratch the GPU die, but it shouldn't kill the card. Also, what are your temps like on the 6970 (i.e., if you're even able to get a temps reading now)?

Strange part is the GPU gets still hot even when it is not detected or even in use by the notebook.

Right after i did the repaste and got white lines the temps showed 45c for core, mem. was 39c and the rest 41 and 45. This is right after the boot)

Ill be going to the dell service were i bought the GPU and just let them remove it from the system to show them that it is in the correctly....after that will have to get it replaced (again, Long story short i bought the 6970 for an asus project but the GPU died so i got it replaced and but new 6970m into the M17)

Before the problem my temps did not go over 74c the fans speeded up and in some games the fans was on all the time and some games the fans has cycles.

Anyway if the shop thinks its the notebook itself they will take it in and test it.

Did you connect an external monitor to test it?

It works on the Integraded GPU what ever i do. I only managed to get it running one time and after that it has been not detected.

Ou well here is a nother chance to get the GPU replace with a better one.

but damn the GPU was only a week old. One of the first 6970m i bought from dell for my project survived in the asus G73 londer then it did in the R3. I used a anti static wristband, GPU had good contact, the thermal paste was on good and i did not overtighten the screws like the factory GPU had. ALso did not even OC the GPU. Just tested Alan Wake for a few min. :(

Realy nice Dell service here :)

Even thou the notebook was bought from a nother shop and not the one that does sertified work for dell they took the R3 in and as the GPU was bought from them they will take the whole notebook in for repair. One tech person said that the mobo. might need replacement and if so then they will replace it for free.

They will give me the notebook back maybe later today or the latest tomorrow so i can use it to do my work on the intel GPU and when the new parts arrive (said to take about 2 weeks) just take it in again and swap them out.

    Hope everything goes well.
