I have been getting rather high maximum temperatures with my m17x R3's 6970m in extremely graphics intensive applications. The highest I have seen has been 79 C and this is not uncommon for me in games such as Crysis with the graphics turned all the way up. My card idles around 58-65 degrees when I am doing normal stuff such as browsing or word processing. I recently did my first repaste ever of a desktop CPU and I was wondering if I should a. be worried about these high temperatures and b. would it be worth it to use the tube of arctic silver x 5 I have laying around to do a gpu repaste. Thanks in advance.

Your idle temps are high but under load they are great. Don't see a reason to repaste other than lower your idle temps.

+1 with above, it's well within acceptable range.

My 6970m idles in the low 60's and sometimes hits 80c during long gaming sessions if I do not prop up the back of the laptop.

Find something to lift the back 1/2" to 1" and temps will drop 5c to 8c.
