Hey all, found the 580m online to buy for the R3 but its just the card and no heatsink included.

Anyone know if the heatsink for the 6970m will work for this card and is it as simple as just taking out the 6970 and putting in the 580? Do i need to change anything in the bios.

Any info would be appreciated, thanks!

I heard the 580m is so high tech it doesn't even need a heat sink even under overclocked stress. Something about 999,999,999 trillion quadcore sub GPU's actually subside time and space rendering a portal to the sun where the heat is transferred, and a gateway to hell (nvidia just froze it over see: engadget.com) to help cool the massive amount of telsa power

^^^^. That was 20 seconds I will never get back.

It could be hard to answer this question. So far no one has posted who owns a 580. Only someone who has seen both could answer it for certain. Good question though. I'm sure lots of people will want to do this upgrade.

Is there really such a big difference between the card performances? Has any psoted any benchmarks with the 580 yet?

Based on those numbers, sure, the performance of the 580m is exciting, but is it really worth the $600-$1000 upgrade? I'm always tempted by the newest tech, but my 6970 is running everything I throw at it beautifully, even the Deus Ex: Human Revolution beta, maxed out. Seems like a big waste of money at this point. Now, 1.5 years from now, I will likely just sell my entire R3 and get whatever's new...

How much did you find the 580m for?

In the real world, you have to gauge for yourself if achieving 5-10 more fps in games is worth paying that extra few hundred bucks.Benchmarking should be taken as reference only.

That is like saying 'in the real world' buying the bigger/faster spooling turbocharger for my car isn't worth the 500$ +100HP upgrade for the .5 second less it takes me to get to 60mph.

I found it for $860 on Ebay brand new of course. Def not paying that, especially after going to notebookcheck.net and seeing that it really doesnt do that much better than the 6970m, especially for $860. Yea it gets alot higher framerate in some games but anything over 60fps wont be seen differently.

I dont understand why everyone benchmarks so much?? Kind of a waste if you ask me.

to answer the op question, yes you can use your existing heatsink for the 580m. you may prolly need to swap out the x mounting plate on the card with the one on your 6970.

benching is fun for some people. its like a game for us.

What i am implying is,unless the performance difference is significant, paying that much moolah for the +5-10 fps upgrade is not worth it.Not everyone has the cash to buy that "bigger/faster spooling turbocharger for that .5 second difference".If you do,good for you.I do agree with INAP that benchmarking is fun,in fact more like a long term olympics for them, but the rest of the world just wants to play awesome games while still being able to feed themselves & pay the rent. :)

What about selling your old card? Isn't it cheaper if you buy from Dell?
