By notebookcheck the 6990m is better than 580 so i just wonder
Why the hell 580 costs 300$ more?![]()
Also im kinda upset that after less then 2 months of having this laptop a new gpu came out and its only 50$ diff( , anyway i could get the 6990? (21 days have past
( ) , any suggestion would be nice , if it involves buying brand new one and just selling my old one i'm not sure if i'll go through this for 17% and i might just wait for the next gen gpu :S ...
-
Also, Nvidia has always been more expensive than AMD. It's just how it it. -
Also for how much we can sell our 6970m? :/
since the diff in the site is 50$ i hope since selling second hand gpu and buying brand new wont make the diff huge.. -
Lots of people have this "problem" of excessive luxury. Do like the smart people do, and wait out the 7000 series next year. Your 6970 will undoubtedly hold easily until then.
Quick side note: Notebookcheck used a desktop GPU which has the same core as the 6990 and same clocks... I'd still hold my breath however. 40nm is 40nm and you can't just pull extra power without extra W out of your a$$, and extra W means extra heat. ESPECIALLY if the 6970 and 6990 are the same card, just one has more processors and more clock.
German forums are very hesitant about the 6990- so am I. I dare wager a large percentage of laptops with 6990s will experience fatal technical difficulties after 1-2 years. I'd also wager a majority of laptop sales are w/o extended warranty.
€dit: And don't call on Dell's reputation. What they did with the 8600s should be illegal... -
what did they do with the 8600s ... i have one ...

All NVIDIA 8400M / 8600M chips faulty? -- Engadget
I personally know of 2 people that got dealt some really crappy cards... 1 year warranty ^_^. If I remember the procedure correctly (was using a different forum at the time), numerous people got the same faulty replacement cards to push them over the warranty. Many cases happened at the 1 year mark, screwing them completely. Heck, my best friend bought a 8600 AFTER that article was written. His Alienware held 1 year and 2 weeks.
€dit: ROFL I FORGOT the worst part! The Dell drivers! How epic, they released drivers to turn on the machince's fans (constantly), and upped the top temp the GPU could reach till forced-shutdown. Hahaha. This was the reason people formed the conspiracy theory above xD. -
wow, pretty crazy, my 8600m has worked for over 3 years, and I have pushed it until it was hot enough to fry and egg on my lap .... guess I got lucky
-
I'd wait theres no games out right now dat the 6990 can handle that the 6970 cant handle with any noticeable difference my plan is to upgrade my hardrive and other stuff that can be gutted and put in a new computer easily than when my video card has problems playing games in 1 or 2 years I'll buy a new one with the money I would've put aside so I could afford a new laptop in those 1 or 2 years
-
or you could do like they said and wait for the 7000's series???
I personally have the money to spend on the 6990m and I'm good at selling stuff so I'll get a good chunck of my money back. -
GTX 580m costs more due to a few reasons:
-more transistors, thus higher cost in manufacturing (though a lot of the transistors are used only in CUDA)
-Nvidia came out first--thus they could set the price
-Nvidia has a lot more marketing going on than AMD...thus more $$$ needed. -

And if so , if i will buy the gpu from dell when its avilable ?? :| -

It is 75-100 Watts. The Nvidia is listed as 100 Watts. We would need the same GPU to be in the same laptop to compare thermals but they probably both use as much power as the other, although Nvidia tends to use more power.

where 75-100w? thats quite jump! I can put 2 mid range cards in that tdp difference! where did you find the info? notebookcheck? they dont even know for sure
-
Well it is on various sites but both will have a TDP of 100W, as it is with all high end notebook cards.

basically what you are saying that there are a lot of sites, that not even heard from the horses mouth about it. so it means that they dont also have the info and speculated based on what nvidia offered. The 5770 was also a 100w tdp card, just like the 6870, what is the tdp of the 5870m?

if you buy the new card from dell then they can add it to your existing warranty.
-
TDP of 100W!
Sound like the battery may burn up when running on battery, the 6970M heat the battery up to dangerous heat levels after 15 mintues or so, I wonder what the 6990M will do to it?
Anyone know what the max clocks are when on battery for the 6990M? -

Don't know if this info will apply here but I recently ordered an M17x with the 6970. Yesterday it was finished in the production stage, yesterday night while browsing I came upon the 6990. Naturally after hearing about a new affordable card that I missed out on I frantically researched it and then emailed my dell resolution expert that I had been in contact with. After a little back and forth she advised me not to cancel my order since it was being readied for shipping and that after I received the laptop she would be able to ship the part separately for installment. I believe I will still only have to pay $50 for the upgrade.

I am in the same boat with the 3D model. I ordered a 460 and soon, like everyone is saying, the 580 will possibly take it place.
So, if and when that time comes, I will need to do the same.
