My boys have a M17x R3 with the 2630's (and nVidia 460m's) and they play everything well, fyi.

I hope you notice some difference in something other than Vantage/benchmarks with the 28xx's cpu.

I am downloading NFS: Hot Pursuit on Origin now ($8) but will download furmark thereafter and let you know my gpu temps too.

    thanx

It makes sense that the 2820's are running hotter because they are turbo'ing higher than my 2630qm. I'll let you guys know next week when i get the CPU

Here you go Dr J...here are my GPU temps after a vantage run

Here you go. The attached vbios is exactly the same as you sent except that the O/C limits have been increased to 850/1150 (little room to grow on). Rename to 715_OD2.rom, copy to a DOS bootable USB stick that contains AtiFlash ( Download ATIFlash 3.89 | techPowerUp), boot from the USB stick (F12 at the boot screen and select) and then flash: "atiflash -p 0 715_OD2.rom" (no quotes). Since you already have a saved copy of the original vbios, there is no need to repeat that process here. After booting into Windows, Overdrive should reflect the revised limits. If you have any questions, let me know.

Just ran Furmark for 4 minutes. Max temp 74 and then hovered at 72-73 for the duration.

Just a quick 10 min test, not adequate. Have since run on furmark but its still only low 70's.

    Which I think is acceptable?

    Stock clocks.

Low 70's is excellent and in line with others who have repasted.

Ok. Now I'm really pissed. I get 90C in Furmark after 1:18 with the same presets at STOCK clocks (stock paste).
    Room temperature is around 20C.
Can it still be a bad paste job? I get 40C when the card is idle. That seems pretty normal. I know the card heats up fast, but if I compare mine to yours, mine has some serious issues. :(

Does your fan turn on? Set the back of your laptop on thick bottlecaps. Vents clean?

Mine still idle's in the 50's when I am surfing.

Repasting cannot hurt and might uncover something amiss inside...

Fan runs at 300+ RPM. I even enabled 100% fan usage in AMD Overdrive. Should I use other software for this?
The back of the laptop is raised so there's nothing to it. I have the system for 2 months now and I don't think vents need cleaning yet. Maybe after one more month.

I really want to repaste. Any suggestions which one I should buy? and where from? I'm from Europe. I also want to apply some other cooling methods, but only when I'll go home in December. Still, I don't want to fry my GPU till then.

I game DX: HR - The Missing Link right now and my GPU hovers around 87-88 (anti-aliasing MLAA, vsync off, shadows normal, DOF normal, SSAO normal, no triple buffering). Sometimes it jumps to 91-92 when there is a lot of fog/smoke/particle effects on the screen. Should I continue playing like this? 85 - 90C is pretty high.

Amazon uk has mx-4 paste. Something is wrong with those temps but 90 max short term is ok. Mine was 89 max for weeks b4 repaste job.

Put your spec's in your sig.

Is that the best one you can get in Europe? What about thermal pads?

bro...100% you need to repaste with some quality paste. The stock paste job is pitiful. When you open it up, you can see that Dell rushed it and the stock paste is plain bad

To further add to my 4 min furmark pic (where i was hovering around 67c), i just did a 10 min furmark burn-in test and it went up 1-2 degrees to 68-69c.

90c might be about right for a stock paste job, but is way too toasty for my liking

that seems about normal to me

i reused the stock pads. They are like silly putty and will not break

The MX-4 is one of the best pastes you can get so its decent stuff.

I got my hands on some Prolimatech PK-1 which is suppose to be the best paste available (according to SkinneeLabs). I'll be using that on my CPU when ShirleyFu delivers it. I'll let you guys know if it is as good as they say.

My current temps in furmark were achieved with OCZ Freeze thermal paste

I have the same notebook. I've seen the highest temps while playing DX:HR so far. Around 85c with ICD 7. After turning shadows off and AA the temps never go above 79c.

It sounds like you don't have good contact after the repaste, because your max temps with ICD should be close to 70C under sustained 100% load.

True, I might need to repaste again but that was when I was experimenting with some overclocking. At stock clocks I'm around 70-75c.

ya, those temps are decent for stock clocks at 100%

After 4 mins of furmark burnin test, I'm at 67c, so you do have a little room for improvement, but you don't really need to unless you're thinking about bumping your clocks way up

    I'm under 73c @ 830/1250 while running my 3dmark11 benches last night

Hello guys! I am looking for a method to decrease gpu temperature. There is already prolimatech pk1 applied, but it seems as the clevo p170hm somehow has a different heat pipe or cooling architecture compared to the m17x? The temps I have seen in the threads so far are out of reach for me. I was thrilled when I saw the screenshots where furmark 1.9.1 ran for some minutes and the gpu temp never went higher than 72 or 73 °C. I have a clean heatpipe, clean fan, no dust at all. Running furmark 1.9.1 results in gpu temps of 95 °C after few minutes, 6990m stock and original vbios. Idle temp of the card is 45 °C. Is there any chance to lower the temp by applying mx-4 or should I have bought an m17x instead? :)

hi Skorpion, applying mx-4 won't lower your temps.

Usually, i'd look at a few factors.

    - raise the back of your laptop up to allow for max cool airflow. You can either do it ghetto style or get a decent notebook cooler, one that doesn't obstruct your intake vents. Some people use a book to prop up the back of their m17x's, I use large flat bottle caps. The DIY technique drops my temps 5-8c (believe it or not) and it was free, plus it gives me a more comfortable typing angle.

    - another thing is your pasting technique. Don't overpaste. There are many videos online that show very bad technique. For the AMD 6990 GPU, you want to apply a slightly larger than a grain of rice size amount of PK-1 right in the middle of GPU die. For cpu, it is slightly different because it is rectangular. You can use my CPU guide in my sig to see how i applied paste.

    - Don't overtighten the screws. You want to screw in the heatsink in a pattern forming an X. So a half turn at a corner while you are forming the X until all bolts are down. This leads to the flattest contact...and don't overtighten. Overtightening can cause flex in the heatsink leading to bad contact. The idea of the X is similar to how you put a tire on a car. You want to bolt it on in the X pattern

Yeah I repasted my GPU and CPU with IC Diamond. Under max load the highest temperature I've seen so far is 75 and I'm currently clocking in at 850/1100
