I've had my m17x r4 for about 2-3 weeks now and today I was playing some WoW, nothing intense at all, when my keyboard stopped working. The screen was still good and I could move around using my mouse but no keyboard. I shut the computer down holding the alien head. When I turned it on I got 7 beeps. I found out that this means the CPU failed. I ended up calling Alienware and I'll be sending out my laptop and getting it back by next Tuesday (hopefully).

All in all, how many of you have experienced the 7 beeps? I'm not hating on Alienware but it sucks that this happened to a brand new laptop.

Also how many of you have experienced good results when sending back your laptop for repairs? I'm moving out of state in 2 weeks and can't afford for them to screw up the timing.

Thanks for reading my rant :)

I wouldn't have sent it out, if you were still within your return period I would have demanded and Exchange. If you were past that demand and in house tech so you can see what he is doing. I've heard horror stories about the depot

Wow, what timing...I don't think God could have perpitrated a system failure any better. I have only heard of an Alienware CPU failing (to the point of seven beeps) once. But he downloads lots p0rn so it was probably the viruses that got him. But I digress...
3 weeks new? I would have hassled them to send a tech to service it at your location, then if that didn't fix it, THEN see if they will exchange it. If it really is just the CPU gone bad, then it would have been faster to have the tech come and service it first. I would NEVER ALLOW DEPOT SERVICE. One it takes forever, and two the Depot is notorious for sending systems back in worse condition than when they arrive. But this is just my two cents, and you've already sent it in so there isn't much can be done at this point anymore.

Well I haven't sent it in just yet. I'm still waiting on the box. What do you all think I should do?? Should I call dell and demand an exchange or call Alienware and demand an exchange? I'm a bit upset now! When they were walking me through some of the troubleshooting to fix the problem the lady asked me to remove the CMOS battery and when I did a little plastic piece holding it down broke off. They said the only way to fix that was to send it in but I don't believe that.

Hmm any suggestions on who to call to try and get a new one?

P.S. no p0rn here, just WoW and regular computer usage lol

So this is what I am going to try and do. I will call Dell and see about a full refund (I am within the 21-day period). After I get the full refund I will purchase another m17x r4 brand new. I am not comfortable with them toying around with my brand new laptop in the repair services. I will most likely buy a pre-built m17x from another website so I won't have to wait 3 weeks for delivery! Also will save me some $$$ which is always nice.

Yup, just call the Dell helpline and say you are not happy with it and want your money back. I've done this with no problem, just make sure they don't try to hit you up with a 'restocking fee'. This is a faulty machine, not buyers remorse :) .

I originally asked for a replacement but they wanted to refund me (lazy I guess) so that is what I did.

God luck with the next one (I'm on my 3rd!)

Restocking fee my @$$. They don't restock anything. They just put it for sale as used on the Dell Outlet site.

Yeah, it is BS but it's the only charge they can legally make when a product is returned during the statutory return period. It is specifically excluded if the product is faulty :)

Yea I ended up getting a full refund and will be ordering another laptop in a couple weeks. I'm moving out of state and don't know my address yet so I don't want to buy just yet. Thinking of moving up to the m18x but not sure. Thanks for your help everyone!
